If you had to re-format your machine tomorrow; what programs would you *have* to have in order to function properly? Or rather which would you keep aside to save yourself the hassle of re-downloading? Try and limit yourself to 10 and see if you can live..

    Mine would be:

    Internet:
    -Firefox
-Norton Internet Security ( no comments please - I know. )
    -Spybot

    Work:
    -OpenOffice
    -Mac Flash Pro
    -Corel Paint XI
    -Visual Studio Pro

    Windows:
    -WinRAR
    -WinDirStat
    -MagicDisc

Essentials for me to have would be:

    Firefox
    Adobe Acrobat
    MS Office
    Putty

A few in house work applications would probably bring it up to 7 or 8 and then a media player like musikCube.

dual boot ftw, if you use the poor mans install you only need a 1GB Fat32 partition , USB keys are also good

I have a version of my Wiindows install done with my unattend.txt setup so i can get it installed without needing me. Has all the hotfixes and drivers I need slipstreamed into it to get a base install working.

Means most of my stuff is preapplied including codepage and localisation settings, network keys etc.

Also have a version done with MS Office as well, but generally tend to have all my software lined up with the neccessary SPs pre-applied. And my dev environment is a virtual machine so thats dead easy to set back up!

    1. Paragon Hard Disk Manager
From which I would reapply the last snapshop.

If it was a new machine and obviously had no image, then I would also need (in no particular order)
    2. Nero Burning Rom
    3. Task switch XP
    4. PeaZip
    5. Paint Shop Pro 6
    6. AVG Free
    7. Opera

    8. VMWare Server
All my development images are now virtual - the real pain is getting all the environments set back up - don't have to worry about that anymore :)

    9. My collection of program images/glyphs and icons.

    10. FTPx and 14All (both old) that I use for maintaining my personal website.

    D.

I'm not inclined to take myself out. I would go for defence instead.
