yarn/pattern suggestions for an aspiring sock knitter?

I'm an almost intermediate knitter (learned in first class but stuck only with scarves until recently) and am hoping to make my first pair of proper socks soon - the cliche of the intermediate knitter!!

hoping to make my first visit to springwools soon - armed with a definite plan for purchases (im dangerous when surrounded by soft things) and want to pick up something suitable for a basic sock pattern.

I've seen plenty of patterns online / in magazines but am unable to get the recommended yarns online because of my refusal to use a credit card - long story, dont ask!

I'm just hoping for some opinions on sock yarns, patterns etc. plus it's nice to just have a 'chat' about these things.

4ply or finer is suitable for socks worn inside shoes. Thicker yarn can be used for novelty or slipper socks. Hickeys in Henry street are good for yarn and patterns.

Have you tried eBay? Some of the sellers accept cheques etc. I got some gorgeous sock yarn from eBay and I am trying to crochet my first pair of socks ever.

I couldn't imagine a crocheted pair of socks being comfortable to wear!
