Was not as painful as it appears to be.

and I was always coached to 'keep your eye on the ball'

I don't care what you say, #1 looks damn painful!
#2 is a great action shot, captures the not very glamorous side of football.

Nice shots thimbleful, wonder what sort of expression is on the face of the guy getting the knee in the midriff, possibly something like...

Thankfully he never made contact which is why I prefaced it with 'Was not as painful as it appears to be.'

Sure footballers wouldn't know pain. They fall over if the breeze blows the wrong way. :D

I'll post some rugby images, with real pain and tackles (even blood).

Interesting images you posted all the same.

OP, nice photographs. I like the sharpness and the angles. I think 1 is a little bit cluttered but it's not like you can tell the other players to bog off while you recreate the central point of contact and facial contorsions...

Picture 2 is near perfect. Well done.

Here's pain for you, playing on with a suspected broken nose.

Threw away two points in the 93rd minute tonight, after fighting back from a goal down. :(

Looks like you had the WB set to cloudy.
    Bit of a strange tone.

    Nice captures though.

Yep, WB set to cloudy for the simple reason it was during a thunderstorm though that's not evident from the pics and I didn't want to up the ISO.

I have found the D3 WB to cast strange colour/tones that you would not expect or at least didn't get with the D50/D200, then again it has a completely different sensor.

I don't get the reference to white balance and ISO? Setting the white balance won't impact on shutter speed nor ISO.

Why not use a custom white balance? Use a grey card or something similar. It should give a better tone to the images. You could set the white balance off the ball, since it's not a clean white. It might just help the images.
