    Hi all,

I have a dell inspiron 9100 laptop. Yesterday the laptop was working absolutely fine, but today I switched it on and the only thing that happened is the 3 lights on the dash on the laptop came on for 2 seconds and switched off again. During this there was no noise from the fans or hard disk or anything. The lights just came on and went off within 2 seconds.

Does anyone have any similar experiences with this type of problem or any advice on whats causing this and what i should do?

Please help....im in no-mans land with this problem.

    Cheers.

There are standard light sequences for Dell laptops - if you aksed me a few months ago I would have known as I was building the things, but I can't remember now.

It might just be the RAM has become loose. One of the covers underneath should reveal the RAM (should be labelled with an "M" next to it) - try taking the RAM out and putting back in again.

    thanks for your replies.

first of all, yes, the computer is plugged in.

Also, it's not the ram coz i had this problem with the computer not booting before and i checked the ram and found out that the ram was the cause. But unfortunately thats not the case this time as i have checked the ram.

Take out battery & power lead, press the ON button 3 times, then plug ONLY the power lead (leave out the battery), and try switching it on.

Do you mean you actually tried reseating the RAM? It may not look visually dislodged - RAM can be temperamental like that. However I think I recall one of the lights stays on (Num Lock or Caps Lock, possibly depending on which DIMM) when there is a DIMM fault.

I also remember the sequence you described above often happened when the CPU was not fitted correctly... :(

I'm fairly sure this is the case with Dells. Whenever I remove my cpu and try to boot all I get is the three lights on for a few seconds then it shuts off. Your cpu is either dislodged or dead. If you're comfortable with opening up your laptop you could try to reseat it.
