The exact same thing happened to an Irish Lights Bolcow helicopter leased from Irish Helicopters back in the 1980ies when a door fell off and landed several hundred feet into an industrial estate. Why can't they put a bit more effort into designing these aircraft so that they don't fall apart when in use.

Because of the very nature of their use, that being an escape hatch, they have to be "quick release". But in the same breath they have to be secure, and thats why the main fault has been placed with the crew and their pre-flight checks. As mentioned above, this was not an isolated case, it has happened a few times over the last number of years, the main thing is that no one was seriously injured in this case, and all the appropriate action was taken very swiftly when needed.

    From the RTE news report:

A report from the Air Accident Investigation Unit found that 400 members of the public were in the aircraft over several hours as the crew prepared to perform a static display.

It took several hours for the crew to "prepare to perform a static display" how do you "perform a static display"?

Bet they do know. But keeping it quiet. Most likely a kid though. A young boy or teenager. I had a look around it on the day too. But I never touched the handle, honest yer honour!.

But unfortunately the real blame lies with the crew member detailed to do the walkaround. One of the most important tasks when an aircraft has been accessible to the general public particularly at airshows is the pre flight. You can find drink cans in air intakes and all manner of objects stashed here and there on the aircraft. They block pitots and static ports with God knows what and they twiddle door handles. They leave sticky hand prints on the perspex and pull every switch and knob on the panel.

The guy who did the walkaround missed the handle in the open position and the door fell off. Simple as that.

Some Mil pilot at an Air Spectacular at Bal found Cans in his exhaust, think is was a French fast jet.
