    Hi,

I wonder if anyone can advise me...

Have been offered a new job (1yr contract) and have accepted and am about to resign from current one. Today I found out that I am pregnant! Hubby & I are delighted - it's amazing news for us.

Do you think that I should inform my new boss asap? I would be 8-9wks when starting in new job and then heading off on leave in December.

Don't know what I should do...!

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Ettie

my sister in law was in a similar position recently.

She told the boss and they were cool with it. If you are the best person for the job they might not have an issue with it.

id tell them as if you dont it might look bad in the long run.

Yeah, tell them straight away and let them know you just found out yourself.

Is it a big or small company? The big company won't care, but it might be a problem for the little company.

Thanks for the replies. Have just sent off an email to the recruiter and company boss explaining all.

Dublindude, it's for a medium-sized organisation but my position is completely new so I honestly don't know how it will go.

Others advised me that legally I don't have to tell my new boss until much later on but personally I couldn't do that and it would stress me too much.

It's a question of priorities I suppose - I probably can stick out (only just!!!!) another 7.5 mths in current role if I know that it will only be for a set period.

Ettie, I wouldnt resign from my current job just yet, just in case your new employers aren't cool with it, but to be honest if they were impressed enough with you to offer you a job they obviously think you have alot to offer, plus the fact you were honest with them can only help your situation, I cant see you having a problem!

    Thanks to all who replied.

Unfortunately this didn't have a good outcome for me - the new boss decided not to proceed with my job offer.

Oh well at least I hadn't given notice in my current role...it's particularly hellish here right now here so feel a bit crap as I have to stick this out until December. At this rate I might go and work in the local shop or something!

Sorry to hear that Ettie. If you're finding it hard to stick out just think of the baby and all the cute baby clothes (little booties!) you can buy if you stick with your job and save some money up! Personally, I'd stay just to ensure you're in the best financial situation possible when the little un arrives.

I know it's not quite the same but I'm heading off travelling next week. I started a job 7 months ago and knew when I started I was going travelling. I didn't like it and wanted to leave soon after joining and temp but the job is well paid and I needed to stay to make sure I had enough money to really enjoy myself. Temping would have drastically reduced my salary. Today is my last day and I'm so so glad I stayed on. I'm in a much better position now and can relax about money for a while and enjoy being in a new country. I'm sure it'll be the same for you and you'll appreciate the fact that you stayed when you have to spend your money on nappies!

A bit late now, but I wouldn't have said anything until contracts had been signed and everything formalised. On the plus side, you didn't hand in your notice in your current job so at least you're not jobless. Do as watna suggested and just stick it out, the extra money will help with the new baby, congrats on that by the way :)

Surprised no one else has mentioned this...but isn't it against employment law to not offer someone a job because they're pregnant?

I'm no legal expert, but in all the various training and refreshers I've been on over the past few years while I've had a responsibility for recruitment in my job pregnancy was always one of the things that could not be used in a decision as to whether to hire someone. I'm not suggesting you go down that route, in fact I hate seeing people use these laws to 'screw' a company when they just didn't get the job, but it sounds like this is exactly the type of case they're intended for.
You were offered the job, you told them you were pregnant, they unoffered you the job siting your pregnancy as the reason. Sounds grossly unfair to me.

Edit to add...Very best of luck with the pregnancy, it's a very exciting time and do whatever you can to make it as relaxing and stress free for yourself and your other half

Looks like it is contract & not a full time job, so I would imagine that different rules apply. If the OP is only going there for a year, then I, for one, am not surprised that the offer was withdrawn if she is going to have to leave just over half way through the assignment !!!

Good luck with the pregnancy though ...

For the record, I would be fairly certain that what they did is illegal.
