Christening Gift?

Hi Ladies

Need to buy a christening gift for my little niece that lives in america, im her godmother so i was hoping to get her something unusual as a keepsake for when shes older... Though you ladies might have been in the same boat as me at one stage or another and be able to offer some advice? Shes a little girl called Cate by the way . Budget would be between 100 and 200 euro.

Probably better off asking in the gifts, festivities & party ideas forum. Twas my Godson christening on Sunday, I got him a pair of silver cufflinks with his initials on them, keepsake for now and useful when he's older.

Since she's a girl, I hear people sometimes get a star named after the godchild as a christening gift.

Get a lovely box ~ even something silver or something rather than cardboard ~ and buy things from the day she was born or christened. Maybe newspapers, the number one CD, TV Guide, put in some photo's, a diary entry from the day of her christening that you have written, maybe a letter to her.

We did this for our nephew who I was also Godmother for and afterwards added some pictures from his christening and his mum and dad loved it. Said it was the best present they got as it was so personal and at the same time something for him to look back on when he's older.

The other present I like for a girl is a charm bracelet (adult sized). None of the above is expensive so you could actually do that and put a charm bracelet into it that you can add charms to for her birthday every year or something...

You could get her a cross on a chain that she could wear on her communion and confirmation (if she is catholic)
You could get her a bangle with her name engraved on it.
A nice keepsake box with her name engraved, date of birth, weight etc..
A Silver Photo Frame
A blanket with her name and date of birth embroidered on it.

Amazon.com will let you use an Irish credit card and they will ship it directly to your godchilds address in the US.

I woud agree with the jewellery suggestion. It's something she'll always have.

That's a lovely idea! The first charm could have the DOB engraved on it.

Thanks guys, her god father got her a bracelet already so i dont want to get another one, love the charm bracelet idea though, would be set for christmas and birthday gifts for some time to come!

I wanted to get her something that she would have long into the future that would have value when shes an adult too so i got her a piece of tiffany silver engraved with her initials:

The box of keep safes was a lovely idea too but harder to do as shes over there and im here Could be lovely idea to do for her 1st birthday too, ill keep it in mind!

What about a locket? Get a picture of your sister when she was younger and put it into it and maybe she can add a picture of your nieces dad when he was younger into it also when it arrives in America. Some people may say that they are out of fashion but it is something that she can have and pass on to her own kids in years to come!!! I gave my godchild a locket for her birthday last year, when she turned 12 and she never takes it off - it's even more sentimental because her mam died 2 years ago, so she loves that she has a part of her mam with her at all times!!!

We had to attend one last year for a child who already 'has everything' and we knew she would be inundated with jewelry, so got her a swarowski figurine, I think a kitten or something, figured when she is older she will have something that is more long lasting that a 'baby' type gift. Also heard of getting 'gift packs' of coins that are issued in the year the child is born. We did that for someone back in Oz. Don't know if they do them here though. Something of value in years to come?

This is a brilliant idea. My sister and my sister in law are pregnant at the moment and this is a lovely idea - might just well do this! thanks

Where about did you get those cufflinks, or were they just regular cufflinks with an engraving? That's a fantastic idea.
