Where to start?

    Hi Guys,

I am sure you have been asked this a million times. But where to start?

I am a very unfit 27yr male, 17 stone in weight and with a very bad back due to a previous car accident. I am looking to lose 3 stone quickly (is there such a thing?) and safely.

My diet is currently a mess, but I am starting to sort that out.

I was considering for a the first few weeks starting with a long cycle? (60mins, every 3 or so days) and long walks.

I am not one for the gym, I can neither afford it right now, or feel comfortable going to one.

    Any suggestions/advice?

With a stable diet and walking, cycling (and as i feel more comfortable) swimming, how long do you think 3 stone would take?

Hi Wanton, we all have at some point, tried something similar that is.

My advice is to post up your current diet and get pointers on where you are going wrong. Get that in order and put simply, just start moving. There is no amazing trick, its basic science.

    :)

lol, my current diet, does not exist tbh.

i lived on fast food and choc and diet coke....

i know diet wise i am just going to aim for small and simple.

something like a wholegrain cereal in the morning, fruit mid morning, lunch will be either sambo and fruit or diner (depends whats on in work) and the opposite in the evening, with some fruit or something in the afternoon. i am a person who enjoys the wrong type of food way too much, so my aim here is to start my cleaning it up. less/no takeaway food, grill instead of fry, cut down on (out) the wrong stuff. i know i am not going to be one of these strict diet of x,y,z.

my biggest concern at the moment is what kind of excersise to aim for.

at the moment i feel so over weight and with my back i feel i need something low impact and someone suggested cycling. It has been suggested to start @ 30mins a day and work up to 60mins a day.

    Hey dude,

First off well done on deciding to take action! At 17 stone, the good news is that by making the right choices over the next few weeks, you will see fat loss very quickly. Simply cutting out all the junk (and you know what it is), fried food etc, eating the right stuff and drinking lots of water will see you dropping pounds in jig time. Don't worry too much about exercise - I'd recommend cycling though as it's great, easy to do and low impact as you say. But no.1 priority is your diet.

Just because you plan out a diet doesn't mean it has to be bad. And planning it with good food doesn't mean it has to be a pain either. It will be quite hard, especially at first, but its a sacrifice you simply have to make.

Diet is the key, whether its fat loss or gain. I'd say (in my own experience) it's been 60-70% of the battle.

When you find the diet or the exercise hard, remember this line and how crap being overweight makes you feel. It will help drive you to change to what you want.

Best of luck - it won't be easy, but if you work hard and stick at it consistantly, it will happen.
