High pitched whine from inside monitor - help!

Hi all, I have a Windows XP which is a few years old and lately the back of my monitor has been emitting a really high pitched whine from inside of it. It's almost a supersonic sound (like one of those noises you hear from those devices which are meant to keep rodents or bugs away!)

I've also found the back of it feels very warm when I touch it. It usually happens when I've been on my computer past the 90 minute mark or therebaouts. I'm guessing it's some sort of overheating issue but I dunno.

Anyone had any experience of this? Is my computer f*cked or can I do something to correct it? It's really bugging me.

    Thanks in advance.

Im guessing its a CRT monitor and if it is the high pitched whine is normal and yes they can get warm to the touch. CRT screens are pretty much just high end TV screens which do the exact same thing.

If the high pitched noise is annoying you theres not much you can do except get a flat panel im afraid.

i had something similiar and every time it started i hit the side of it.
always went away on the second slap.

it lasted about 8 months doing that. then it blew with a mighty roar.

All I can think of is trying a different resolution and/or refresh rate.
I remember one of my old CRTs emitting a high-pitched whine (along with garbled lines) when it was sent an out of range signal. (as opposed to the more slick way more modern CRTs handled it)
Might be just on it's way out... they don't last forever :/

Can sometimes help, especially if the refresh rate has been changed in the past. Check that its set to the lowest frequency, 60hz, i think. To change the refresh rate, right click on desktop, > properties, > settings > advanced, and then the monitor tab at the top.
Also try reducing the brightness a little.

    Very probably.

I checked it now and it is set at 60 hz. I reduced the brightness yesterday but it's still acting up. I find that if I turn off the monitor the high pitch will stop and it will begin to cool down but then eventually it comes back after a while. I think you guys are right and it's just simply on its last legs.

    Cheers for the feedback anyway.

Classic sign she's on her last legs.....although it may remain like that for ages.
