Grey Partridges

    Hi All,

Does anyone know of any game dealers who rear grey partridges. We released them two year ago and obtained a permit to shoot them from Duchas as they were not native stock and the ground was not suitable for any breeding. However the game breeder was in the North and we were looking for someone closer to home.
    Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Bibio

The NARGC should be able to give you all the info you need they had some at the game fair last year.

Pat Kelly in Ballivor, Co Meath always did partridges. Not sure if he still does them.

I only know of red leg partridge being reared in this country. The success rate of reared and released Grey Partridge is very low, primarily due to modern farming methods which have destroyed the habitat required. There is also very little evidence to suggest that released birds will breed in the wild, apparently this is a genetic problem with reared breeding stock.

+1. My dad and his friends have tried the same in Belgium with very limited success. You get the odd clutch working out alright but in general it's waste of time with no lasting effect no matter what you do. If you really want to hunt partridge on your shoot buy adult birds and hunt them and don't expect anything more.
