Help!!
I am not a computer wiz but I have just got the run around from Dell and McAfee and microsoft and nobody will give me any satisfaction.
About 3 weeks ago my Dell XPS whihc runs MS Vista and outlook 2007 stopped sending my emails (from an eircom address) the following McAffee error message came up
"After you verify the format of your recipient address McAffee recommends that you resend those messagesfrom your email program"
McAffee support say it is microsoft and vice versa. Dell say tits onthing to do with them.
Any help would be appreciated

Remove McAfee. Problem will be solved. If it is, well at least your machine will be better off.
In all seriousness though it does sound like a McAfee email scanner plugin issue either for spam or the antiviral checker, remove McAfee, see if it fixes the issue. You should be using mail2.eircom.net for your smtp and pop3 settings in your email account properties (just to confirm their also right)

If removing McAfee doesn't fix the email sending problem, it might be worth checking whether Eircom have some new system at their server, especially if it's an anti-spam measure. I've had the same problem for a couple of weeks, and learned from UK forums that this often coincides with problems sending mail. Lo and behold, my ISP (UTV) has done this recently and they're currently inundated with helpline calls.

If your problem's at Eircom's server though, don't necessarily start using McAfee again - majiktripp's authority has the air of being born of hard experience!

Only if your ISP is eircom. If not, you'll have to use your ISP's own mail servers.

Thank you for the suggestions.
I have uninstalled McAfee and while I dont get a
McAfee error message anymore, I still cannot send emails. I also changed my settings to mail2 etc... and this has made no difference. It seems to be a spam problem as the "SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR" message in outlook refers to a "spamhaus" query. Also I think it cannot be a eircom problem as I set up a gmail account in outlook and I can't send emails from this address either. Spamhaus say it is a email authentication problem. ANy suggestions????

Who do you connect to the internet with? Who is your broadband provider?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭ploughbynight

I connect to the internet using a O2 mobile device.

Sorry I forgot. I use either mozillafitrefox or internet explorer.

Then you need to tell outlook to use the Outgoing SMTP server that O2 provide to send your mail. You will have to use google to find what the address of that server is with O2. For example, with magnet it's smtp.magnet.ie

Tools | Options | Mail Setup -> Accounts, select your account and then 'Change' and put the O2 smtp server address in to Outgoing Mail Server

1) You can generally receive mail regardless of your ISP, as you have to authenticate to the server in order to download your mail.
2) You don't authenticate to the outgoing mail server, so in order to prevent just anyone using an outgoing mail server to send spam, many ISP's have started to restrict who can send mail through their smtp server. One way of doing this is only allowing people to connect to the smtp server if they are in an allowed range of ip addresses. Eircom have started this policy in the last number of weeks and a few people have been caught out by it. Yourself included. When you connect using O2, ur not in teh allowed range of ip addresses so you can't use the Eircom mail server to send mail. If you change to the O2 one, you will.

I was assuming that you had just changed your broadband connection to O2. Is that right?

Then on re-reading the thread I saw you mentioned a gmail account. How is that set up in Outlook, is it using IMAP?

What did you change just before it stopped working? Or was everything unchanged until suddenly the McAfee message came up and you couldn't send emails?

Have you used the McAfee removal tool, or just uninstalled the software?

Also - can you expand on this- It seems to be a spam problem as the "SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR" message in outlook refers to a "spamhaus" query.

Post up the whole error message please. Was it a message that came back after you tried to send a mail?

The outgoing mail for o2 is
smtp.o2.ie
if you change this in your outgoing server settings, you should be able to send mail...

The "system administrator" message is as follows:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: test message
Sent: 12/04/2008 00:27

The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

'pcs@agriculture.gov.ie' on 12/04/2008 00:27
451 http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=89.204.206.55

To answer a few questions. The problem started on the 18th March 2008, but Ive had O2 since july 2007. Nothiing changed around March, the McAfee error message just started to appear. I have removed McAfee using the removal tool and this has done nothing except eliminate the McAfee error message. Now I have problems receiving mail and sending mail even with the Gmail.
Things are getting worse. All contributions are appreciated and thank you all for your help thus far.

Folks,
My latest installment in the saga is:
I have tried out what a number of contributors have suggested in that :)(MS outlook) I have switched the outbound mail server to O2 and it works, and I have left the inbound mail server as mail2.eircom.net.

However, my gmail account (through outlook) will not receive mails and I have tried both POP3 and IMAP, with various settings, but to no avail. The SMTP o2 stting is working fine for outgoing email.
Any suggestions.

I presume you've set gmail up as per the instructions?
