dvd player - connectable with a hard drive or alternative

Any advice on dvd player on sale that could be connected to an external hd.. would even step up to blu ray if it was the right choice.. have heard of a system called popcorn elswhere.. any ideas of its specs and if it works here. and actually what exactly it does
