Canon EOS 40D : I took the plunge

Here I come as another soon-to-be owner of a 40D. :D After a long time lingering every where possible to make a decision, I took the plunge. Ordered one with the 17-85mm lens kit from Jessops.com yesterday for £869 which also include postage of £9. Hopefully it arrives as soon as Monday .

Was considering Kea Photo but I am a bit worried about the hassle to sort out for warranty if anything goes wrong. Also looked at Komplett, Warehouse Express and couple of other UK online retailers but they seem to be out of stock.

After a £140 Canon cashback, net cost to me will be £729 - that works out around €935, which also cheaper than buying from Kea Photo (£784 incl postage). :p

Also found out after I placed my order, if I was buying the camera + lens kit with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 MkII (which is £79.99) total purchase would be £949. The nifty fifty is expensive in Jacobs but if I had use a coupon SPRING45, I will get £45 off from total purchases i.e. £904 and effectively the lense would only cost £35! But done is done - the order was ready to be dispatched and couldn't be amended. :(

Oh yeah, use mymemory.com for cheap compact flash memory. Ordered myself 2 pcs of 4GB Sandisk Extreme III for £42 incl. postage.

Anyway, I hope the above helps anyone who's looking for any bargain.

    Cheers,
    Marty

    Hope it arrives soon Marty!!
I got the 40D too last Friday with the 17-85mm lens. I love it... obsessively. MY precious!
I'd been using a Canon 300D for the last year so understandably I'm in awe of the 40D. :p All the obvious things are great, the speed, quality etc etc.
I bought it on the condition that I give up cigarettes.. so it will be paid off in less than 6 months if I think of it that way.

Saving for the 40D at the moment so I am a bit jealous. ;)

40D is a brilliant camera and well worth the money. Mine doesn't get nearly as much use as it used to, but I can't fault it.

Now you'll have great fun getting out and using it.

Got a 40D, up from the 400D a few weeks ago and I love it. Its such a step up...

Have fun with your new toy!

what courier do jessops use ? Have you given thought to the customs charge ? :( i think its 21%. Is their shop in Dublin still around ?

There's no vat on an import from inside the EU. You're already paying tax in the country of origin.

Jessops is gone from Dublin a few months now.

really? shocking, ive been very ignorant, trying to arrange payments for ebay sellers where as jessops is providing to be much more cheaper and convenient.
Thanks Paulw and mart_max. Any idea how long cash back rebate takes?

Thanks to all for the "good" influences around here. :p

Was thinking about 400D but at the end it is 40D - why not! :)

Yogibear, good luck with giving up smoking. You could reward yourself afterward with bigger and better lenses, perhaps :pac:.

Placebo, I think they still have a shop up the north but not sure whether they have same pricing. Jessops use Initial City Link as their courier provider and I believe they also have operations in Ireland, according to their website.

Canon is currently running a cashback promo between 1 Mar to 30 Jun 2008 for digital SLR and lenses. Here is the link for details http://canonlensacc2008.onlinerebates.com. Having no experience with this cashback, I can't tell how long it will take but the Canon site says one should receive the cashback within 30 days.

Also, like Paul said there is no VAT import within EU countries. If anyone would like to read a little bit of current import and excise duty this is the link to our Revenue website http://www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/services/customs/tariff2008/tariff08.htm

    Cheers,
    Marty

Of course there's rumours. :D But, can't see Canon having a 50D until at least Aug this year, but more likely Feb/Mar 09.

    Placebo,

I forgot to mention that the coupon offer excludes any digital SLR purchase but what I was trying to say if you add anything else to the cart, you'll get a maximum of £45 deduction. Basically, if you add a lense or bag worth £45 - it would be free! And, if you are adding anything that makes the total order value exceeds £1,000 use coupon code SPRING55 - that's a £55 off. I can't confirm but hopefully they honour those kind of orders.

I don't think they do next day delivery to Ireland but perhaps if you could give them a ring. Good luck.

    Marty

p/s: mymemory has dispatched my sandisk.. no sign of anything from jessops yet.

YEAH i found out this morning thanks, theres another code for 10% off but it also excludes dslrs. Im not sure if i want a 50mm, 17-85 really covers that focal length probably not at the aperture 50mm offers [might be wrong here completely] gonna by tripod and bag instead.
    Did you get a bag?

    thanks again !

That 50mm is the well known nifty fifty, cheap and good for portrait shots especially in low light condition.

I haven't got any bag or tripod yet. Might just go into town and try which bag suits my needs. Just want to start slowly, so not buying too much at a time, maybe next month or thereafter.
