Where to go from here... (gear advice needed)

    Hey all.

Looking to consolidate my gear into the few essentials. At the moment I've a collection of pedals and a microcube (and using a 212 peavey valve king in band practice). My main problem is I'm useless at getting good tones out of the gear I use. With the microcube it's grand, but with a full rig its a bit of a disaster. Tbh I'd much rather be playing the instrument than messing around with a sea of gear, so I'm thinking of one of the following choices

    - Buy a multieffects pedal (looking long and hard at the GT 10 - EZ tone looks like my man)

    - Buy a modeling amp (eg Spider III or Valve)

    - Play the banjo

Now i'm in a covers band atm and would also be mad to have a collection of tones at my fingertips (vai, satriani etc) so the land of patches seems like a good idea.

Any suggestions and/or comments on the selected gear?

What guitar do you have at the moment? To be blunt, but honest, a Line 6 Spider III or Spider Valve is hardly going to be tonal heaven. If you don't like the complication of using pedals, just sell them and invest in a high quality amplifier. Keep it simple. Multi effects pedals are fun but they don't guarantee good tone. In fact, from my experience, it can be very difficult to get good tones out of them.

Post up a list of all the equipment (inc. any instruments) you use/have. Also, what kind of sounds are you looking for. :)

Well it should be easy enough to get a good sound outta the valve king, they are good amps! I take you use that live aswell?

And im pretty sure it has a fx loop, some pedals(delay) will only sound great through that!!Look at the way your pedals are set up, moving the around will make a big difference!!

As far as multieffects pedals goes i think you are better off with individual pedals, i used one of them for a few years and while it was good you dont have the same control on most of them, and they dont sound as good as individual pedals!

Also look into an eq pedal, it made sooooooooooo much difference to my sound when i got one!!I use the mxr ten band one, in the fx loop!

Well I ain''t a guitar player but from playing with many i think i can safely say this.

Get a very good guitar, a very good amp and add a multi effects board... Keep it simple.

AS pointed out to me recently, people play lots of single boss pedals, why not just get the GT10.... there the same thing. Yes it might be a tad bit more button pressing to get your sound, but if you mid gig and you need to mess with settings then..... sort it out before hand.

I disagree. all that fiddleing with patches is a pain in the arse. Get a good guitar, good amp and a couple of good pedals and you are sorted.

Any guitarist worth there salt will understand what all the "fiddling" is meant to do. Like i said, if your doing it mid song then your an idiot. I agree fewer pedals the better but the OP did mention the GT10

Think of yourself as lucky. If you played the violin, just think of all the fiddling you'd have to do then...!

Oh yes. Can I get a high five for that that one!
