Fedex freaks !

Bought an item on Ebay for £35 (= about €45) from Hong Kong. Agreed a price with seller for shipping. I received the item at the start of March. I thought that was the end of it !!!

Received a letter from Fedex this week saying that I have to pay duty, fair enough ! But they've added an extra €10 admin fee !! They say as they paid the duty when the item first entered the country this fee is for this service. I said that this should be an expense for the seller (as I already agreed a shipping price), they advised no as they indicated that the seller stated that the recipient would pay any additional duty / cutom related charges !

I have a number of problems with this:

    - This is not a custom charge, it is an extra fee charged by Fedex !
    - I agreed a price with the seller for shipping. I shouldnt have to pay anymore.
    - I never asked Fedex to pay the duty, the letter I received 5 weeks after getting the item was the first I heard of any duty !
    - I have no say over how the item was shipped, if I knew I was going to get an additional charge I wouldnt ship with them.

Anybody else come accross this behaviour? I will end up paying this as I couldnt be arsed going through a lotta cr*p to save myself €10 - between letters and phone calls you would probably spend more than €10 !!

Yes it is, and you're lucky they didn't charge 15 euro as they normally do, and then add VAT on top of that too!

The importer is always liable for any import duties.

No, customs did, and we get no choice in the matter.

Better to use An Post for deliveries if you can, less chance of being hit with customs as only a small percentage of packages are inspected.

Lots have, including myself. First one from FedEx I ignored, then got a rather snotty letter threatening legal action. Been hit a few times with An Post, but only about 1 out of every 30 or 40 that could be liable.

Its not a customs charge, its an admin fee charged by Fedex. Their is a seperate entry for customs / VAT on the invoice. Oh yeah and they did charge VAT on top of the admin fee of €2.10 !!!!

it's a charge for them clearing your shipment through customs. Using their account to pay the customs charge, and having to followup with you to get the money.

happened to me, probably happened to 99% percent of people who've bought anything outside of the EU over the internet. It's a risk you take when buying abroad.

I meant yes it is to the 2nd part of your statement. Yes it is an extra charge, and it appears you weren't so lucky as not to be charged VAT on that too.

Got hit by FedEx for €50 in more a less the same situation for a large tripod bag, comming from America, in fairness €50 is a lot less than the amount of money I have saved through buying things from HK,USA,UK etc and NOT getting caught for tax.
So accept it, be at one with it, you got caught for tax, Fed Ex made the call and paid your bill, don't pay them back if you don't want to , just don't expect to get a mortgage or loan easily with that bad credit rating.
