Hi everyone. This is my first post in this forum. I'm getting a bit bored of my current collection of music, and I was thinking of expanding it a bit. If you could give me some advice on what to look into, that would be great. I'll give you some examples of the music I'm into, and maybe one or two albums I don't like so much.

    Albums I love:
Pink Floyd- Dark side of the moon
    Radiohead- In rainbows
Yo La tengo- I can hear the heart beating as one
    The orb- adventures through underworld
    DJ shadow- Endtroducing
The cure- (just a "best of" album, but I like it)
Boards of canada- Music has the right to children
Bloc party- Silent alarm (Hated this album at first for some reason, but it's grown on me)
The shins- Oh, inverted world (but **** Zach braff!)

    ...and millions more, of course.

Not so keen on sigur ros, I find them a bit whiney and depressing. I'd like a bit more upbeat music in my collection, but upbeat music which isn't "pop" as such. For instance, I'd steer clear of bands like "the thrills" from a few years ago.

Any suggestions you have would be great, cheers.

MGMT, Tapes n Tapes, Justice, Digitalism, Cold War Kids.

Should be enough there to keep you interested for awhile.

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver (good upbeat stuff, esp. "North American Scum" and "All My Friends")
Saint Germain - Tourist (electronic jazz, very chilled)
Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of the Bewilderbeast
The Beta Band - The 3 EPs
David Holmes - Bow Down to the Exit Sign
Rob Dougan - Furious Angels (esp. the instrumental versions on Disc 2) (a little bit like "Stem/Long Stem", in that it's sort of orchestral with beats)
Sufjan Stevens - Greetings from Michigan
Sufjan Stevens - Come On, Feel the Illinoise!
    Four Tet - Rounds
    Broken Social Scene - S/T
Super Furry Animals - Rings Around The World
Supergrass - In It For The Money
    Weezer - Pinkerton
    Talking Heads - 77

There is a few cracking tracks...Winter, Undeclared, God? of example.

As an album from start to finish, there are better 2008 albums.

Get ALL the Radiohead albums. They're all wonderful (PH is slightly less than wonderful)
UNKLE might be down your street
Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah might be right up your alley with nice upbeat music
RJD2 is the new DJ Shadow :)

To be honest, when I'm in need of something upbeat I usually go to my electronic and hip hop stuff these days. If you want some recommendations just drop me a pm.

Kold and anyone into electronic should check out Venetain Snares.

Basically DJ Shadow meets neo-classical. Truly unrelenting music.

You won't be able to find it down in HMV or Amazon however.

Well how about some progressive rock?

    King Crimson
    - 'The Court of the Crimson King', 'Discipline' & 'Red' to name but a few great albums. They all sound pretty different too since the bands line up was constantly changing, so if you're giving them a listen try out a few of their albums instead of just the one.

Or some jazz fusion with a bit of rock thrown into the mix?

The Mahavishnu Orchestra - Their stuff is pretty much instrumental. 'Birds of Fire' is one of their albums I'd highly recommend.
Also; Weather Report - Another jazz-fusion group. More instrumental stuff, check out 'Heavy Weather'; the song 'A Remark You Made' is just excellent.

I see somebody mentioned The National earlier. I'd give them a +1 Definitely check them out if you haven't already.
The Buena Vista Social Club are another I listen to regularly. Its really chill-out Cuban music. Its a big change from anything you've listed previously, but worth a look into.
The Fall are a post-punk band who have been knocking about for the last 30 years or so. They've quite a wide selection of music from over the years. I was introduced to them with the album 'The Real New Fall LP', which I'm a huge fan of.
Ween (who are also playing a gig in Dublin soon), are an alternative rock group who use a lot of electronics to alter their instruments, mainly to effect the vocals. Quebec and The Mollusk are some of their most popular albums. They really aren't for everybody though; do give them a chance if you're checking them out.

I could go on all day here, but if you're looking for anymore pm me and I'll glad mention some more.

    Good luck!

Indeed the Fall are amazing "The Real New Fall LP" is the best of their recent releases "Extricate" is thier best 90's album "This nations saving grace" best 80's album and "Live at the witch trials" best 70's album
If you fancy splashing out get "The Complete Peel Sessions Box Set" a 6CD compilation album containing all 24 of their peel sessions unbelievably great stuff.

i'll throw my support behind the fall, great band, i love everything from the earlier stuff through to the more emm, lively brix era stuff through to the present day, there is only a few hiccups in a huge back catoluge (bar some awful semi-official best of's and live albums) and even the hiccups are only such by fall standards. ahhhh... the fall, "always different; always the same."

best albums imo are hex induction hour and grotesque. there is also a great live album "the legendary choas tape" which has some of the best kazoo work you could hope to hear.

i see Boards of Canada & Fourtet mentioned so i'll say Fujiya & Miyagi as they are similar in type.

Electrelane, Lemon Jelly, Portishead ((not sure about the new album though:eek:), Enon & Soulwax.

    to name but a few

The Fall, aka Mark E Smith never did it for me. and having read his Biography extracts recently i cant see myself endeared to him at any point in the future!.
