I've been running it for over a month on Vista x64. Seems good to me.

From what I gather, it's not got anything much that's worth getting. For the amount of memory it takes up.

I've got no problems with Vista so I'm not going near it.

If you have specific problems I would get a patch just to fix that, but with SP1 you'd be downloading a bloated pack of fixes you probably won't ever need.

    Just MHO.

Should prolly use the search function. Big thread on SP1 before.

Running x64 with SP1 also with no issues. Seems more responsive and file transfer speeds have been fixed.

Does it help with downlaod spped from teh interweb?

    Like Youporn videos?

That's the only problem I have with my yoke.

If it improves that then I'd get SP1 bit I have a feeling that's an issue with bandwidth on my wireless broadband.

I think when it was launched first there was something about that if you have some drivers that are incompatible it won't show up... I know i had to update some drivers (sound ones) for it to show up...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,593 ✭✭✭Soundman

Yeah, I saw that about the drivers in the original thread on this, but I am fully up to date on ALL drivers and I'm still not seeing anything, which I find strange. It isn't anything to do with the language pack either as I am using the English one. Been through the knowledge base and can't see any other reason to be honest.

    Thanks anyway though.

If you want you can download the offline installation package manually from Microsoft and get it that way.

Do you have a dell by any chance? if you do the realtek sound driver needs to be upgraded. if you try to upgrade the driver through windows it'll say it doesn't need to be upgraded.

I have a Lenovo, and as I said in the post you quoted... I am fully up to date on ALL drivers.

Tried installing the standalone version from the Microsoft site and just got a could not install dialogue and that it would revert changes. Found out after that that the failed upgrade managed to corrupt a lot of my system files so I can't run chkdsk, memtest and possibly a few others. Tried doing an upgrade install of Vista to try and sort those out but it won't even let me do that. Looks like I'm going to have to do a poxy fresh install after all the hard work upgrading drivers and getting the comp just the way I like it.

Next time you get it where you like it , download clonezilla and make an image of your hard drive , and put it somewhere safe ! It takes ten minutes !
Do that once a month , and youll never be in that nasty situation again.

Wasn't appearing for me either (Vista Business), so just downloaded manually from MS' site.

I have a Dell, which may have some bearing judging from previos posts regarding soundcard, though sound is still working OK...

Have successfully installed SP1 on my Vista Home Premium Dell Inspiron - Dual core AMD, 2GB RAM, Nvidia Graphics card.

Windowsupdate was not offering me SP1 (Realtek HD Audio Drivers issue I believe) so I download the 400mb+ version of SP1.

    Before installing:-

    a) Update Realtek HD Audio drivers from http://tinyurl.com/yjvyhr

    b) Uninstalled Logitech Pro 5000 web cam

    c) Removed UPS usb sensor cable

    d) Unplugged all other usb devices

    e) Ran Windows Update twice (first time got yet another update for NVIDIA and older REALTEK drivers (but from Microsoft) - so decided to let windows have its preferences in this respect.

The second time to see if any other updates turned up or indeed is SP1 was suddenly available - alas not a sausage)

    f) Backed up all important data to external drive

    g) Shut down extraneous services in Task Pane - stop AV resident shield service

    h) Run SP1 and go and make tea

The whole process took about an hour, was seamless and I was able to reinstall the Logitek cam from drivers offered me by Windows update in no time at all.

Post install my PC is running really well and, so far, there are no issues at all.

Hope this is of some help to others wanting to take the plunge and install SP1.

    Steve

Was running a beta SP1 on Vista 32 for about 5 months with no probs at all, in fact it help it in many ways.

the official release SP1 on 64 is just as good I feel and transferring huge files via USB is a joy now.:)

(well OK, maybe not a 'joy' but it's a hell of a lot faster!)

I thought SP1 was being given to us piecemeal over the past few months, in all their numerous patches, updates, definitions, etc.?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

Running it on my lappy fine for ages now..

I can't tell from reading the thread so don't kill me, but is this coming through MS update or do you have to go get it from their site? I did an msupdate a few days ago and there were about 11 updates?

    Any help appreciated.

Check your update history and see if it downloaded in that. :)

    hmmm

i have a .sys, .inf and .cat ......

How exactly do I install this?

It is/was , thats why if you can see it in windows update the download is way smaller , otherwise you have to download the pack which is huge , 400MB + and the pack would include a lot of stuff you already have.

Looks like I have found out what got screwed up. Looks like my MBR got corrupted so I'm going to have to wait til I go home next and grab my Vista disk to do a fixmbr on it.

    36mb/s to external usb2.0 hdd
    12-8mb/s 10/100 lan
havent tried across same pc hdd's as my laptop only has the one.

overall much increased speed , responsiveness over non sp1 vista
for anyone with vista i highly recommend it.

Got an official Vista DVD w/SP1 integrated which I installed last weekend.
    Yeah it's running fine..

    (P4 3.0GHz, 1.5GB PC3200 RAM, Intel 865 chipset, 2xSATA drives, ATI 9600 AGP)

actually I lie... it doesn't pick up the Creative Audigy card I have properly, so I have to disable that soundcard and enable the onboard audio which is Realtek. So sometimes the Realtek driver just 'cuts out' and you've to reboot to get the sound working again. (Had the same problem pre-SP1 though.)

And my Trendnet wireless network card caused four BSODs on Sunday. When I downloaded the proper Vista driver from the manufacturer, Vista would let me install it, saying that 'the Microsoft driver was already up-to-date'.
