What kind of runners do you wear?

    Hi,

Here's a topic that's been done to death I'm sure - but just thought I'd ask what kind of runners you guys tend to wear. I've always been of the 'they're all the same from the same factory' - and I suspect I always will be however, I have noticed that my 4 months old Asics 1120s are wearing very, very well - better than usual - hence the thread. Now - I know you probably all wear Asics etc - but I'd like to hear the model - because I keep nearly buying them.

    So for me:
Asics 1120, 300-400 miles on them. Like new. Minimal wear. My first pair of these and I found them very stiff after my previous cheapo but great Asics Vertigo (everyone had them!). And expensive! But - finally I feel like they've hit the sweet spot! Also bought those cheap Asics Blackhawks and for whatever reason that are the worst runners I've ever had. Just can't run in them. Even for slow slow stuff. They will be recycled.

Anyone wear those racing 'flats' btw? they look super-light. any use?! Wouldn't mind buying some of those..

Also, I keep wondering about those Kayanos that everyone raves about - are they really that good?! Would like to hear some first hand stuff on those! 150 yoyos is a lot. Where's the benefit? I'm pretty light on my feet - reckon any point in them?

    Finally - I'm tempted by Adidas/Mizuno.

Anyway, I just got in from running a few miles tonight and it just occurred to me!

Have a pair of Asics Kayana, don't like them, they don't seem to suit me.
Clocked up many miles in a pair of Asics 2110s. I also have a pair of Brooks Adrenaline GTS6. Very comfortable shoe, although a little bit slow off the forefoot. Good for long distance.

geoff29, do you know what your gait is like? What suits your stride will not suit anyone else. Other things like how heavy you are and what type of runnign do you will all influence the trainers you need.

Personally I use the Kayano's but it is as HM said totally down to your own gait, foot shape etc. €150 is expensive too (picking a pair up in the US this week for $135, damn that paddy tax). Anyway I would say what ever you choose you'll probably pay €100++ for quality. Although one shoe might look quite like another there are subtle but significant differences and not just in quality. Some shoes are more support orientated and others more cushion etc.., it depends on the user as to which is best.

Mizunos(wave inspire) which I love. Great shoe if you're a light pronator and like a light shoe.

Also have a pair of sauconys, very cushioned so good for "pounding the pavement" running.

I train in Nike Pegasus 2006. I don't like them as much as my previous pair of Pegasus (2004 model). I've read bad reports about the current, 2007 models. As the current pair are wearing down, I'm trying to think what pair to get next.

For races I have Asics Gel Speedstar II. Nice and light. Previously I had Asics DS Trainer and really liked them but wanted something a little lighter again, but with more cushioning than the DS Racer (and a less in-your-face colour).

I had my gait looked at in Arnotts a few years ago (right before a BUPA 10k). I could see that I didn't over pronate. At 11 stone I don't need extra cushioning. Maybe a visit to Bray is in order.

I pronate quite a bit. So its motion control all the way for me. I have a few selections depending on my mood and length of run: Mizuno wave alchemy for the shorter stuff, New Balance 858's for the longer runs, Kayano's for walking around in and at the gym. I was considering the Brooks beast too, but with me at 11.5 stone they could be overkill.
BTW does anyone have any experience with arch supports? do they work? and where could I pick them up in Dublin?

    Total Balance.

yep prob should have mentioned that - but interested in everyone's opinion as well, ya know? anyone else with 1120s?!

Im 155lbs, 5-9, very slight over-pronation but almost neutral. think im light on my heels and put more on my forefoot area when im not tired! No prob with arch - though i do have a narrow foot and which can move around when im in the worng shoes!
I don't cover *huge* mileage - prob 20-50k per week depending how I feel. I do quite a bit of sprinting though and I find that can wreck the uppers somewhat.

Thats why i was wondering about the lighter runners too. Like the look of the new gel-banditos in USA - replacing the ohana. haven't seen them around here - anyone?
daymobrew - did you get your speedstars in ireland? haven't seen them either - only the ds-12s etc. - havent heard the best about them tho..

Anyway like i was saying my Asics 1120s are working well. Relatively, they have good support and have kept their shape well. All my other runners are now falling to bits so as a trainer-pair i might try and get one of the lighter shoes available - purely because I haven't tried them before! However, I keep seeing 1120s in sales for damn-all so, despite their lurid colours I might pick up a second pair.

I wear the Asics Kinsei, just because I got them for only €85. And they look amazingly cool. But I wouldn't reccomend them, they really don't justify their massive price tag. Before them I had 2120s, the model before the current one, but in the blue colour. They were brilliant and Im definately going to get the current ones in the coming weeks. I've no clue about mileage because mine varies a lot from week to week.

A bit OT but a couple of people mentioned weight? How does this affect your running and choice of shoe?

I'm nearly 14.5 stone so I find a shoe with a fair bit of cushion does the job - am I thinking straight?

I use Saucony Omni 6 and love them, really comfortable.

I've tried nearly every brand of runner out there. I have no problems anymore with runners since I got a gait analysis done which told me I am neutral footed. I'm currently on a pair of Mizunos wave10s. They are a lovely runner, with nice soft lining around the ankle, and look the business .

But I'll happly to try on other runners the next time I'm down at a sports shop, I stay away from the muppets at champion/lifestyle/jjb etc, and instead go to someone who actually knows what a neutral runner is! The make doesnt bother me as long as they are comfortable

Was anyone else tempted by the €12 runners in Lidl recently?! I thought they looked cool in the pictures! Alas I didn't see them in real life. But €12!

"Hey - what kind of runners are they?"
    - "I genuinely don't know."

    Good old Lidl

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 239 ✭✭geoff29

tribulus - not really sure. I've always been around this weight - but I would imagine that the heavier you are - the harder you are on your runners and feet etc. Isn't that why some girls have thick ankles?!

I wish they didn't! The world would be a better place..

    I know - I'm terrible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 723 ✭✭✭finlma

I run in Brooks Adrenaline GTS 8. I pronate slightly so find them good. I couldn't care less what a pair of runners look like as long as I stay injury free when I run.

    I wouldn't recommend buying €12 runners

No, got them in NY in Dec 06.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,919 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

The Pegasus 2004 were definitely the best model of that shoe. Really gone downhill since.

Personally I like the Kayanos as they suit my feet and when I worked in sports retail I never had anyone bring them back as faulty.

At the moment I'm still running in my pair of the first Adidas a3 that I picked up about 3/4 years ago. They suited me down to the ground, so much so that I bought two pairs thanks to staff discount! Don't think they've brought the same one out since unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,463 ✭✭✭run_Forrest_run

I've been using the Kayano for years now and I'm happy with them. I still get the odd hip problem but I won't blame the poor shoes on that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,435 ✭✭✭christeb

On the Kayanos myself currently and also have a pair of Kinseis lying around.

Instead of having to go to Bray, has anybody tried Runways beside Cycleways on Parnell St.

They do gait analysis, was going to check them out in a couple of weeks when I get some time. Shop looks small enough, maybe not the same selection of the Amphibian King?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,942 ✭✭✭topper75

I train in a variety of brands and my favourite to date is Saucony Omni progrid 4. Almost flawless. Got them in states a year ago but I am sure they are available here. Have been newer versions out too since.

I also have asics DS racer flats, which I love and spare for races only.

It's a hard choice, because to an extent you get what you pay for and to an extent you don't e.g. I heard the Asics Kinseis were not great considering the cost, but I would never do much distance in a 12E shoe at the same time.

    Experiment.

Bought a pair of Lidl runners before for walking around in as they looked nice. Let's just say you needed a tube of superglue handy for them to even be up for that task ;)

    go on the Lidl!

Using Asic Nimbus at the moment and I love them. I'm bit underpronator and narrow feet.
Used kayanos before and didnt suit my feet. Really improved since changed runners, might not be all due the runners but it makes you and idea how important to wear the right runners is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 796 ✭✭✭jrar

Mizuno Waverider 10 - selected after gait analysis in Bray last year. Very comfortable and only starting to wear now with about 450 miles on them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,376 ✭✭✭Squirrel

I wear Nike Skylon, have been for a few years now. And for track work when I don't want to wear spikes I wear Nike Marathoner racing shoes. Both feel ideal for my feet.

I'm a bit sceptical about all this gait analysis, I found a pair of shoes I like and keep me relatively injury free, bar my own stupidity with ankles and football, yet I reccommended a pair of shoes when I did the gait analysis that gave me a stress fracture on my shin. No increase in training.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,635 ✭✭✭KatCookie

Any places that do gait analysis in the south east??
    ie Kilkenny ish area???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,406 ✭✭✭ike

Mizuno Wave 10 for me, I'm a supinator with a high arch and a rigid foot so they have been doing the job so far

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

Aasics blackhawks, which were a nightmare to 'break in' but afterwards are super comfortable.

Then I saw kayano's on offer in lifestlye sports on paddys day and I got them for 112 yo yos. Truely the most comfortable shoe I've ever run in, I'm really and truely in love. :D

Since starting running I've worn Asics 2110 / 2120 and now 2130's. Not mad about the 2130s, they took longer to get used to than the others but the do the job.

Much as I like the idea of trying out new trainers I always chicken out - I know the 21xx series work for me and I don't want to blow a bundle of money on something that'll get me injured.

That said at around 140lbs, just under 6' and a ~40min 10k, 3:15 marathon runner with a neutral gait (never tested but trainers wear very evenly) I am thinking about getting a lighter pair of trainers for racing in. Any suggestions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 108 ✭✭robbicosta

    140lbs, man that's light!

I'm 185lbs, just under 6' a ~40min 10k, 3:36 marathon runner with a slight over pronation. Like you, I've worn the 21 series as have found them the most comfortable. I previously wore Nimbus then Kayanos but the former were not structured enough and the latter were too structured.

I found my most comfortable pair (21XX) and when I did a gait analysis recently they confirmed that I was wearing the correct shoes.

Amadeus, same as you, I'm looking for another pair of lighter runners too. I currently am using a single pair of asics 1120s after everything else i have has pretty much fallen apart.

was looking briefly in town and had a look at the asics ds trainers. they're pretty light - but at €120 - they should be! Seem expensive..

    anyone have these?

im not really big into Nike etc - but they have an entry pair called the Nike Dart V which were also very, very light - but only cost €60. I was very surprised how light they were - much closer to DS than 1120 in weight for instance.

Was looking online and saw Nike Downdraft II msl or something - anyone have these or know anything about them?!

Obviously Im looking on the lower end of the spectrum at the mo..! sale on in lifestyle btw

would all you runners kill me for saying im too cheap to buy asics, i used these a while back, they were heaven!!
    http://rogansshoes.com/Reebok-AztecRoad-44-ViewProduct-16161-1109-1110432.asp http://shoesfact.com/Reebok/AztecRoad.php (the female version)
Just looked up the womens Nike Downdraft, they look very light..
Do light ones always last as long as heavier ones? orhow does it work?
Always go to rathdowney outlet store and buy runners from Reebok, .. its easier for me to pay €60 there than to buy Asics which cost twice as much.. .. Im a cheapskate..am thinking of buying Asics now, as i hopefully wi;ll get my shoulder prob sorted so i can run again, but am not gonna spend 120 on them... hate going into elverys anyways, people never help me!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 239 ✭✭geoff29

asics the best? nah i think whatever is comfortable! I've had a few pairs of adidas, reebok, nike and asics over the last few years - and i would not say that asics are superior... in fact I reckon the more serious runners all have their own pref of obscure makes we dont hear of! but prob like you I never buy the expensive ones - and Im a big fan of sales!!

in fact i think asics are going a bit silly really with all this 'technology', hence my sudden want for a lightweight shoe. My Asics 1120s are wearing really well but theyre quite heavy for me - and I'm not a fan of this 'trustic' moulded plastic thing they have in the middle of the shoe - I think that could possibly hinder rather than help!

so yeh think itl be back to the nikes for a change. dart or downdraft - now that is the question!!

I remember the days when buying runners meant going to Dunnes as a kid.. i feel tempted to do the same just to give a v-sign to the big names!! still tempted by lidl!!

As the prophet An-khal In-jurri says: "He who gives v-sign to big names will soon find cheap runners giving v-sign to him":)

By all means buy cheap clothing etc., but the one part of your equipment you should spend money on is your runners, a good pair will save you from injury. Cheap runners are not designed to absorb running impact, your knees, hips, back, shins, etc don't ask for much from you, do the right thing and get a decent (€80+) set of runners.

If you're willing to stretch to it, the Nike Skylon are a great lightweight shoe. I've had a fair few pairs over the last number of years and they've been the best shoes I've ever run in.

In terms of weight due to the way they are made Mizuno's are quite a light trainer.

I tried on a pair of the Asics DS Trainers today but wound up buying a pair of Hyperspeed2's
    m.hyper_speed2.jpg

They are a racing flat rather than a trainer so I'm going to stick with teh 2130's for training and the Hyperspeeds for race day.

    Happy days!

    amadeus-
congrats on the new shoes! how much do those things cost and how do they feel - 'flats' have a pretty low heel, right? Was thinking of getting something like that because I tend to run on my forefoot more - especially when I'm not tired!!

the more and more miles i put on my 1120s the more I like them!! did that rte race yesterday - 5 miles in 31 mins - and not once did I even think about my runners.. I think that's high praise! Saw some fancy running shoes about the place though...

    Hi All,

I started off wearing pegasus and asics nimbus. I got the new pegasus last year and can't wear them, I find them really uncomfortable.
That left me with the Nimbus. Theres a new version out this year. I bought 2 pairs in the arnotts sale at christmas. I started wearing them about a month ago and have developed huge calluses at the balls of each feet, so a trip to the chiropodist is required, unless anyone can recommend a home remedy??

Anyways, now Nimbus and pegs are out, can anyone recommend another Neutral Shoe?

Hey I've tried the Saucony Truimph they are quite roomy at the front might help you. I've also run in the Mizuno wave Rider but didn't really like them.

    Both neutral shoes.
