The price is fixed by Apple, Inc and no shop will give you a discount/haggle. If you want a discount check out the Irish refurb store, and sometimes O2 have offers on macs. O2 Experience store, Spectra Photo, etc sell macs.

just to be accurate, the price isn't set by apple, the resellers can charge any price they like, however, apple set the price that all resellers buy at and also they set their own online store price which gives the independent resellers a paltry margin so you will find that they generally will sell at exactly the online store price as this is the only way they could possible consider box shipping.

Typetec are based in Ballymount, Mactivate in Ballycoolin, Dectek are also out that direction.

I use custom computers (custom.ie) to purchase all of my equipment or client's equipment, john will give it to you close enough to the apple store price and advise you if he can do the ram cheaper (still making the 4% that the apple store charges) but I've generally found him to be reliable and straight up in the last 5 years we've been dealing with each other. We're talking anywhere between 10k and 30k a year so a pretty hefty sum.

Negotiating generally on hardware prices is a moot point when you got the apple store there, where the suppiers are making money is that they put their kingston/crucial ram in and get their margins that way. Extra drives for a mac pro, suppliers can do it cheaper, imac accessories, suppliers can do it cheaper. Off the shelf buy applestore or ask your supplier to match it (he'll get it and make his margin although low still worth it).

There is an educational discount - not that well publicised, you'll need a current college ID (or someone elses obviously they would prob need to go with you) to buy it they just take a photocopy. I'm not sure but when I got my PB G4 in 2004 the saving = a bluetooth mouse anyway - round 90 quid or so at the time.

If you go to the store you can check the educational prices there afaik.

First off, don't fret too much.

If it's worth anything to you, any time I ordered from the Apple Store, the product tracker has pinned the day down exactly in all 4 orders I ever made. Twice I got calls from the delivery man to give an approximate time (The other times, I wasn't called but was in) and in one case I got him to deliver to an alternative address of a neighbour, which was no problem to them. If you are not getting any specs added, your iMac will almost certainly be next day or 48 hour despatch so it will be easy enough to ascertain the delivery day; alternatively get it despatched to your workplace or that of a friend who can take it in for you. The worst that will happen is the courier will return it to the depot; collection or a second despatch can be arranged. :)

For the record, the deliveries are ultra secure and are even signed electronically.

also bear in mind, imac is due for update very shortly according to the rumour sites.. if you want to pick up a cheaper one, wait for it to be refreshed and then go the refurb section on the apple site
