Hi all does anyone know of a camera that does not take Jpegs? I know that lots of cameras take a raw format and jpeg but is there any out there that cannot take an image and not save it as a Jpeg.

    thank you

Is it just me or does that make no sense?

Are you wondering if a camera will only shoot raw? if so, yes. you just have to select the format in the menu

    Ah alright, sorry.

I am aware of a few one offs and custom made cameras that take images in a proprietary format alright. I haven't any details handy though I'm afraid. As for mass market cameras I'm honestly not sure.

Sigma SD9 and SD10 only do Sigma RAW format.

Hasselblad H3D only takes pictures in 3FR files

I'm curious, why are you looking for a camera that doesn't write to JPG?

The Canon G9 (and possibly the G7) takes RAW files.

Edit, I think I understand the OP a little better now...
Most SLRs have the option for various types of Jpeg and an option for RAW plus Jpeg as well as just RAW.

Are you looking for a RAW only setting?

Its handy if you want to shoot RAW but are a bit tight on memory card space.
You can browse then in Bridge like any file type and then save out a bunch of jpegs etc in a batch in Photoshop.

Sorry, you misunder stood me, I didn't mean shooting in raw only (which is better in terms of memory than RAW + JPEG)

I meant, whats the advantage of camera that shoots in RAW only, and has no JPEG or RAW + JPEG mode

You can look down on your poor photog friends who only use JPEG?

Or you don't want to be tempted to switch to JPEG for easier shots?

I don't really understand why people would prefer having less choice - surely more is better (not megapixels though :p)

I think I'm having one of those days... :o

I agree, having an open format like jpeg is essential and a proprietary file type only camera would be silly.

    This is a confusing thread!

    THanks everyone for responses
ok doing a presentation its about manipulating exif data in a Jpeg file and it was pointed out to me that I would have to show how widespread the use of jpeg format was for Taking Photographs

No I am not looking for a camera that only takes raw photos

Mellor: not looking for a camera I needed confirmation of what I already knew but I need to find some exceptions that prove the rule.

quilmore and Qwertz: thank you I figured one of those really expensive models would have something like that. That exactly what I was looking for.
so Sigma and HasselBlad prove the rule!! (That most Cameras can take pics in the Jpeg Format)

    the rest of you ......

    I don't know. *shakes head*

    :D

no it does make sense but that is because i was responding Roen. I thought the original question was quiet clear.

    *pointedly dirty look at roen*

I think the thing that confused everyone was you saying a camera that doesnt take an image... that seems more like a puzzle ;-)
