I was using my WD portable passport when all of a sudden I heard the beep that sounds whenever it is plugged in or removed. Now whenever I plug the harddrive in it says that it is not formatted. I would really like to keep the data on the drive is there any way to retrieve it? Using xp btw.

Have you got another cable you can try. I found that the bundled USB cable with it is a pile of Poo. Same thing happened with my girlfriend's Passport drive, 2 days after putting her entire Music collection on it. By using a different cable I was able to access everything and save it. I copied it to another drive and reformatted and error-checked too just to be safe. Worked a treat.

Thanks for the idea but it did not work. I eventually ended up recovering the data with some data recovery software. I was able to get everything back and am now reformatting the drive. It came in FAT32 but I am reformatting in NTFS, is this all right to do?
