Calorie Intake?

    Hi guys , I also put this tread up on the diet & nutrition! But wondering how many cals I should be having a day? At the moment I have increased my protein and fat intake and decreased my carb.. Its working well but I still want to make sure that I am eating enough or maybe eating too much! Im female , 25 , 5'6 , 138lb / 9stone 12lb. Weight train 3 days with 20 mins cardio / 3 day 40 /50 mins cardio. At the moment I am eating around 1700 cals - 1800 cals a day thats before taking of what I burn off through excercise ! Any ideas ?

    First, I would not try to calculate what you burn off during exercise. Those machines in the gym that claim to tell you are full of lies (the ones that show you burn the most cals are the most popular and get replaced most often, so now all machines show high calorie burn). Calorie burn is way too dependent on your own metabolism and general fitness.

    Ok, this is very rough and ready, but I reckon that for a woman who works out three times a week, but who drives or buses to a desk job, 12 calories per pound of body weight is maintenance. If you want to lose weight, you have to decrease from there, maybe to 11 cals per pound.

    If you know your lean mass (total weight minus bodyfat), then around 13 cals per pound of lean mass is a good cutting level, which allows you to lose fat and have an occasional cheat meal.

    If you are very fit or muscular, or if you have a more active lifestyle or if you are breastfeeding, you could increase to 13-15 cals per pound, but I've got to say, I don't know many women who can.
