No Audio Through HDMI Connection

I built a media centre pc for a friend last week and decided to try it out on my own 42" samsung tv. The picture is amazing but i have no audio,i have the pc connected to the tv via the hdmi cable only. The sound is fine when i connect a set of headphones to the 3.5mm audio jack on the pc so i assume it's not an audio codec issue.
Is the audio output transferred via the HDMI cable or do i need to transfer the audio through a separate lead for example a 3.5mm audio jack to twin phono?

What is the graphics card , alternatively where on the PC is the HDMI port ?

Usually , to get the audio to the TV over HDMI , the PC soundcard has to be set to spdif passthrough .

When the PC is set to spdif passthrough there will be no sound from the PC speakers , and probably none through the headphones either , which makes me suspect that its not set to spdif passthrough.

thanks for the reply Mathias. The motherboard is this lad here http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=343412,with onboard graphics,i tried the 3.5mm jack output on the pc itself and it works fine,it's just when i go through the HDMI output which is mounted on the motherboard.i have the onboard 7.1 soundcard enabled in the bios.there is an spdif header on the motherboard if you want to install a pci express graphics card at any stage there are no jumpers on the board related to the sound card.

Play around with the advanced volume controls - I think I remember something similar with mine at one stage.

Right click the little volume icon in the system tray and select properties, then take it from there....

    Hey joeali101,

Have a check in your motherboard's BIOS settings. Very often, if it has on-board HDMI, then the BIOS will have an option to pump out 1. Just Video, or 2. Video + Audio.

Keep in mind that this may be hidden / labelled sneakily as 1. Standard Video Output / VGA or 2. HDMI.

Give that a shot, see how you fare!
