Car Tax...

Can I ask a question here for those with impending classics.
Does everyone tax their car when only a year or two left to go before qualifying for classic tax. If not have you been pulled for this and what has the general attitude of the garda towards this.

I brought in a car in '03, sorted it out etc etc and decided to tax it for the year in '06 at a cost of €1033 and found myself maybe using it 30 times all year. Now once again am getting impatient but can not justify spending over a K to tax and again rarely use. It is a 1981 in lovely condition NCT relatively perfect, so do not take out in the rain,(I know laughable really, we live in Ireland) but don't want to take out to saturate the underbody and then let sit up for another month, am ony inviting rust.

Basically am wondering have many out there been in the same circumstances and what was their experience, do not wish on getting points which will affect my everyday motor as a result of a weekend stroll.
    Cheers for any input..:)

You can't get points for not having the car taxed, 'just' the fine and paying of the back tax.

I am perpetually in a similar situation with one or more cars. I use them for maybe 500-1k miles a year, mostly in nice weather and for shows. So I tax one or more of them for 3 or 6 months of the year.

This is a big dilema for many people.
I know someone who has two cars same make, similar model, similar reg and colour but uses the same same tax disc for both ie takes the disc from one to the other as required. He claims to have gone through check points without any bother. Seems a bit OTT to me and you would get in a heap of trouble if caught.

not quite on topic, but here goes ...

The Swiss have a great system when you have several cars (classic or not).

    The transferrable registration.

You pay tax and insurance for the most expensive (tax and insurance wise) of your cars and then you can transfer the plate to any other vehicle you may own and take that for a spin.

Only one special plate is issued (marked with some holographic seal or something)

    Brilliant !

Maybe one could lobby someone here for an equivalent ?

A good idea in theory,i like the way it works, and it makes sense, though i wouldnt like having the same reg for all my cars, the old reg is part of the appeal.

The Swiss are probably more trustworthy than us... I could see all sorts of scams going if that was introduced here, such as one family member buy a plate/tax and pass it around to all the others, etc...

Also, don't forget this is a tax. Set up to collect money, not to facilitate enthusiasts that own multiple bangers.

It is wrong in my view - it is basically an ownership tax and not a usage tax. Tax the fuel and be done with it. It'll never happen.

    Indeed! The polluter should pay

They did it in France. There is no longer any motor tax over there. It is included in the fuel excise duty. Maybe we can do it here too with Bertie gone and a clean (non-corrupt) slate and all that?

wot rot..if that was the case owners of 20 yr old cars would be posting here asking if they can get away with not taxing their motors

Tax that car properley fellaz...dont risk spoiling the priviledges we are allowed.

    Agree with Corky I do.
Although I hate the thoughts of paying car tax, I don't look for get outs or make excuses like saying the car looks old...

    Same goes for NCT.
The amount of cars I've enquired about that are under 30 but not NCTed where the seller states that it's actually okay for whatever reason they have dreamed up.

Slightly off topic, but i taxed the chevette today, and the guy in the office didnt even look at the tax book, i had to ask him to stamp it(to keep it up to date because i like to keep it in order)and he looked at me strangely like i was asking something odd.Is the tax book system so old now they dont even want to stamp them?

Can you not put the car up on blocks and ask for a garda decleration that it was off the road, then tax the car for the summer (3 months)

Its an idea, and im sure its being done by a few lads here, but i like to hop in all year round when i feel like it and go off for a spin, i find it very theraputic to dissapear for an hour or two in one of the cars...!:D

theres a space on the form specifically for a declaration at the Gards barracks that it hasnt been on the road for the past few months...this is the way to go....still needs an NCT though

this is one of my cars...taxed and insured and plainly off the road for some time to come....

25 years isn't rot! It's FIVAs definition of a historic vehicle.

    thats relevant how?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭8~)

Well as I stated already I do tax my older cars for either 3 or 6 months of the summer - they're declared off road for the rest of the time.

I've gone to the tax office in the past and been questioned why I want to pay the previous month's tax (as in pay a month's back tax)... yer wan appeared to think I was half mad not to have gone in with a Garda form...

Personally since my calssics are over 30, therefore road tax is €46/annum, I would hate to see it being added to fuel costs.
I would be instantly paying more than €46, and the Government would be making even more money from the motorists.

They should introduce some sort of sliding scale system, I mean if a car is insured as a classic and there is another car for general use then I dont think the owner should pay the current full rates !
