As a mere member of the public - just out of interest - I want to see what goes on in a district court sitting. But I don't want to look like a fool...

Can you enter/exit anytime the is in session or are the doors "locked" for the duration to stop disruptions? (Maybe I'll be late or if its boring I'll want to leave ASAP)

Do you have to wear a suit?

Can you take notes (a quiet pen and paper)?

Do you have to bow/geneflect towards the judge?

You can come and go as you please provided you are not causing a disruption and provided that the sitting is not private (e.g. family law or to do with children). Turn your phone off and don't bring small children with you.

Not unless you want people to mistake you for a solicitor or a repentant drunk driver.

Only if you bring a pen and paper.

You only have to bow if you're a senior counsel or have back problems. You should only geneflect if the district judge in question is an image of the son of god nailed to a cross, and those judges are few and far between.

A friend showed up in his best, auditor's 3-piece suit only to be asked by some, er.... accused to represent him.

I hope he asked for cash upfront.
