Wireless extender

I searched this forum for a post about this but none of them really answered my question.
I travel a lot in my job and I sometimes can't get a strong enough wireless signal in the hotel rooms I stay in.
I've seen those wireless extenders advertised but they seem to be more for people who want to extend the strength of their signal from the router in their house.
They take the signal from the wireless access point and re-transmit it at a higher rate.
You have to place them half way between your access point and wherever you are getting the weak signal from.
Obviously you won't do that in a hotel unless you're very stupid.
Is there anything I can do/buy to widen the range from the laptop?

It would help if you described what hardware you are using at the moment....

It's for a laptop, I've built it wireless in it, it's a two year old Targa.

    You have a few options.
If you're handy you can buy one of these.
Open your laptop and plug it into the wifi radio.
You can thread the cable through one of the ports on your laptop that you don't use or use a Dremel tool to make an opening.
stick the antenna on the side of the screen and of you go.

Otherwise you could use a USB wifi stick with an external antenna. This will also greatly boost your range...

The first option seems like far too much work. This option seems to be the second one you are talking about:

    Maybe something like this

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=334605

Not as neat as an inbuilt solution but looks to have good results.

    That's certainly a good option..

This thing might also do the job:

    http://www.practicallynetworked.com/review.asp?pid=592

It can act as client, router or bridge and is neat and nice for traveling.

So if you have wired internet in the hotel room, you can use it as access point. If you need to get the connection to your laptop, you can plug it with a long lan cable into the lan port of your laptop and use it in client mode. Worst case, hang it out the window :-D

Nah, too much technical gobbledygook in that for me (even though I work in IT).
And it ships from the US. I bought the one on komplett.
    Thanks for the link regardless.
