    Is this some sort of crippled HTTP-only service much like vodafone's? or do they allow access to all services such as ssh, pop3, bittorrent? what about incoming connections are they blocked?

    Assuming this is working fine, could I get the 3pay sim, use it in a K800i with a 3g dual sim for internet use only? (And continue to use my meteor sim for calls / texts)

    It was all restricted up till about 2 months ago, all ports seem to be open now tho, I have used ftp, ssh, telnet, gogle talk, msn, icq, irc, fring, spodtronic and more from the phone. bare in mind they still filter some web content.

    incomming connections are blocked, they have a very small ip pool that are shared.

    This is what i'm hoping to do myself.
    Simply because that data addon is about the best I can find on any network at the moment.

    What 3G dual-sim are you looking at, ablelocks?

    I got the sim card today, but they have this stupid "age verification" bull****. the thought of having to go back into their little shop and hand over even more details before i can browse the interwebs on my phone pisses me off.

    it is almost as much trouble to get mobile broadband as it is to buy a shotgun now.

    The reason you have to age verify is under 18yr old can buy these handsets too so by law the access has to be restricted. If they were selling it with open access we would all be giving out about that.
    You can verify by callin CC with a credit card in your name.
    Grow Up!!!

    i don't have, or want a credit card. i don't have a freaking job so getting one wouldnt be a good idea. free wifi, interweb cafe's, second hand sim cards are available everywhere so i don't know who they are trying to fool. it must be done for political correctness reasons more than anything

    and the strangest thing is they actually told me if I went away and bought the USB modem they wouldn't need the verification.

    mobile broadband (broadband on a phone not the modem)is regulated thats why you need to verify (normal "broadband" with their modem is not).
    the simple truth is it's the law and unless I'm mistaken you don't but second hand sims off them:rolleyes:
    If you but a second hand sim that has been age verified then they are not responsible if they sold them in store with open access then they would be.
    Simple:rolleyes::rolleyes:

    damn weird. is that also why they keep asking me for the "IMEI number of my data modem" ?

    i never had this problem with meteor. and orange in england but they charge so much nobody can afford to use it for actual interweb browsing & downloading

    If it's CC asking for the IMEI of your modem thats so they can pull up your account when you call.

    Has anyone tried using your phone as a modem for a PC with a 3Pay SIM and this add-on ?

    I know it works with a 3 UK SIM, even though it shouldn't :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,611 ✭✭✭✭Sam Vimes

    What settings are you using for a non three E61. I have a non three N93 and when I put in the settings from the sticky thread above it wont open the three main page so i cannot buy the add-on:(

    sorry, this is a 3-thread, but you stirred my curiosity....

    can you say how you connected the Asus eee PC to the phone (data cable, bluetooth..)? Did you have to source Linux drivers for your mobile, or did it work with the standard Asus OS?

    I am thinking of getting an Eee PC, and also a new phone, and it seems that the 3pay €10/1G/mth deal is the best mobile broadband.

    thanks!

    no this is not the standard eee OS unfortunately. The kernel in that wouldn´t recognise my bluetooth dongle or the data cable. but maybe yours will work. it should also be possible to recompile the kernel, or a new one might be released.

    i use EeeXubuntu. installed some bluetooth packages like bluez-utils, rfcomm and wvdial. then i had to pair my phone which was a pain in the ass. and i use

    rfcomm bind rfcomm1 00:12:D1:8C:57:E5 2

    to set up the virtual com port for bt.

    and this section in my wvdial.conf

    [Dialer Three]
    Auto DNS = 1
    Init1 = ATZ
    Init2 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","3ireland.ie"
    Stupid Mode = 1
    Phone = *99#
    Ask Password = 0
    SetVolume = 2
    FlowControl = CRTSCTS
    Modem = /dev/rfcomm1
    Username = none
    Dial Command = ATD
    Password = none

    so now all I do to connect is run ¨wvdial Three¨

    of course using the data cable would be a lot easier - i´d just use /dev/ttyACM0 instead of the whole rfcomm/bluetooth/paring business

    Thanks to both posters for your advice. I am now successfully running the eee over Bluetooth with a 3pay skypephone.

    I am using the standard Linux that shipped with the eee-pc 701.

    Then I bought one of these bluetooth adapters -
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.83

    [ I also tried this adapter, and while the eee recognised it, the phone did not bond with it -
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11866 ]

    Then I downloaded this utility
    http://www.3eportal.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=17&Itemid=34
    and installed it.

    And followed the prompts. I made sure the phone Modem Connection was set to Bluetooth, and it successfully paired with the eee adapter, and I was then on-line.

    The only surprise is that I must be on the 3G network to get full internet access; otherwise I only have access to the planet3 content (ie. useless).
