Have a new 17-55 2.8 which is VERY soft at 2.8 - nice and sharp @ F4 though. Was going to send into Canon Ireland for a calibration and hope for the best. Think its worth it or would ISS or Canon UK be a better bet?

    thanks.

My experience with ISS is they charge a lot and do nothing except send your lens to a company in the UK ... Canon won't do anything themselves except send you to ISS ... but it may be worth asking if they can provide you with the contact details for an actaul repair shop in the UK and not justr an agent ...

There is also a contact I got from Cathy Gunn ... he does Nikon repairs mostly ... Alan McDonald 01 4781638 ... I don't know much about him ... or to be honest if he does Canon ... but he comes highly recommended by the Gunns ...

A friend got a new HSM focus motor in his 70-200 there and got it cleaned out also so they hopefully should be able to calibrate your lens..

Thanks. I'll give him a shout and see what he can do.

Am I being too fussy? Am I expecting too much to have this lens sharp at 2.8? I've got links to samples taken at F4 and 2.8. To me the 2.8 is just way to soft and even if I bump up the sharpening in pp, I need to bring it right up to the point where I start to get a lot of noise.

You would normally expect any Zoom to be less sharp at the extremes ... I have the same issue with the 70-200 F2.8L IS ... I often back it off a stop to get more sharpness ...

By their nature Zoom's are a design compromise in trying to be multi functional ... This is why there is always a good reason to have a few primes in the range you need most ...

Just a quick update to let others know.

ISS - As someone said they don't do the work themselves. Gets sent directly to the UK for calibration/fixing.

DML - don't fix/calibrate anything but Hasslebad (sp?). They recommended Conns or Alan McDonald

Alan McDonald - Will fix just about any camera/lens. Seems like they know what they are talking about. Only downside is that they are not authorized Canon service so anything they do to your stuff invalidates the warranty.
