Dana White: Marketing Genius or Dickhead?

I was reading Fighters only this month when a quote from Dana caught my eye. This is in relation to signing Fedor, should the oppurtunity arise. He says '[Would I sign Fedor?] Instantly. In a heartbeat. Many people think he is the best. I don't. Not even close, [but there are many people who would like to see him fight in the UFC]'

Now I can accept someone not thinking he's the best in the world. A blind, deaf iguana for example. But not even close. Is this a marketing ploy or is his head so far up his own ass that he can clean his teeth from the inside?

Fedor practically raped every fighter that he fought and went over to the UFC.

Id loved to see him fight in the UFC.. but dint know if it will happen, it seem that only has been fighters or those that couldnt cut it in the Pride.. go Ufc..

Well it's been a while since Fedor has really taken a fight that will test him, so i have a hard time putting him as the best in the world right now.

Is a motivated Fedor with the fire inside the greatest heavyweight on the plant? Yes.

But i haven't seen the fire for a while now.

And the answer to the question is maybe on dickhead bit and definitely on the second.

I mean, he shows a side of him in public and on tv but that doesn't mean he lives up to it.

Look at Tito, always struck me as a total asshole then he does TUF and turns out to be a good guy.

Fedor is the greatest heavyweight alive today. Dana is just saying that because if he doesn't sign him, he will try to make the fans believe that UFC has the top heavyweights.

Still, Dana is a marketing genius.

It doesn't matter what he really thinks, that quote is all to do with marketing. Why would he have offered Fedor the most lucrative contract ever in the UFC last year if he didn't think that he was close to the best in the world?

The fact now is that Fedor may well be fighting in the US this year, but not for the UFC. The average MMA fan is a UFC fan and they're going to put weight in Dana's comments if Fedor ends up fighting for another promotion. And if Fedor signs with the UFC then Dana won't be making any more comments like that

As for whether he's a marketing genius or not, just look at how far the UFC has come under his leadership

Who says the two are mutually exclusive? Perhaps he just believes his own hype, which would actually make one a better marketer.

Dana White is in the business of promoting fighters that are contracted to him. He makes no money for his company by pushing guys as world beaters who aren't under contract with the UFC. And that's all there really is to say about it.

Man Fedor not being tested?

How many heavy weights can you think of could beat Hong Man Choi in a ring? Hong Man beat Semmy Shilt. So Hong Man is seriously dangerous. Fedor handled him like it was nothing. Given the difficult Tim Silvia gives people because of his size (Far smaller than Hong Man) and "striking" (Far worse than Hong Man) I think he's a good test for any heavy weight.

Dana is Marketing Genius AND Dickhead.

Firstly, it's "Pride", not "The Pride. And Pride is out of business, so WTF are you talking about?
And Cro Cop, Anderson Silva, "Rampage" Jackson, Dan Henderson, Wanderlai, Shogun Rua - these guys coudn't cut it in Pride, so they went to UFC? They're all the top guys from Pride FFS, and 2 of them are curent title holders in UFC!

That was in K1 yes? How would Fedor have done if he couldn't go for that arm do you think? THEN it would be have been a different test altogether.

Dana is a Dickhead and a great marketing man, No reason why you cant be both, he annoys me when he say's false things that everyone knows is just nonsense!! but he has made the ufc a famous brand from no where..

We all remember the **** he was saying about Wanderlei, this is how he deals. He didn't learn anything from the fact that Fedor and his people were totally offended last time around, but its not like anything can be done about it. Fedor in the UFC would be amazing, but if it doesn't happen it doesn't happen.

Oh and don't be so sure Fedor's going to fight in America. Since the M1 project's fallen through, Monte's been taking every opportunity to say how everyone was right, Fedor with a $2m price tag just isn't viable, so I wouldn't expect to see him on the Adrenaline show or in EliteXC. I wouldn't expect him to show up in the Affliction or Golden Boy shows either, if they ever actually happen.

I'm seriously shocked he's not in Dream already, it makes no sense to me.

I think Dana is a legend, I'd say he'd be great craic to go on the piss with in vegas, few bottles of champagne at the bar, a few classy hookers in the vip section, great stuff. I don't think he's a genius but an honest grafter. I like him. WAR DANA. sherdog.

Funny you should say that, he used to be an alcoholic but went sober 15 years ago, but there's been rumours that he fell off the wagon recently. I wouldn't be too hasty to believe it though

Yeah, Fedor fought Hong Man under K1 Hero's rules, not k-1. However, like I said, Tim Silva gives everyone fits in the UFC purely because of his striking and size... neither of which come remotely close to Hong Man Choi!
