CD Burner not working - Help!

    PC/XP Pro

On Friday I had an extra 500Gb in stalled in my desktop.

    Everything is working fine.

However, for the first time just now, I have tried to burn a DVD.

    I am using CDBurnerXP.

I open the DVD tray and insert a DVD. Usually, inserting the DVD prompts the computer to open a window listing a few options. This isn't happening.

Also, in CDBurnerXP, there is a drop down menu where you can select either CD or DVD, depending on which tray you're using. However, CDBurnerXP is only "seeing" the CD tray/option.

Any idea what might be wrong? Could the driver be missing? The DVD burner not connected? (The green light at the front of the DVD drawer does light up when I insert the DVD and then goes out.)

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    D.

Edited: Sorted! Went into Device Manager and noticed there was a yellow exclamation mark next to the DVD device. I uninstalled and reinstalled and seems OK now.

    OK, not quite sorted. :(

I have just burned a 4Gb folder, but it took 1 hour and 10 minutes. Crazy!

Is this because the Windows driver that was installed in Device Manager is slower than the original one? (This is a DELL machine.)

If so, how can I remedy this?

I have a DELL CD which has "For Reinstalling CyberLink PowerDVD" 5.5 Software.

Is this what was driving the DVD burner? Should I install it?

I also have a ROXIO Creator CD, but I never liked this and use CDBurnerXP instead. But, presumably, this isn't the driver. Right?

Device manager gives the DVD burner as a "Philips DVD+- RW DVD8801".

    Thanks.

What speed is the burner? What speed are you using?

    Sherifu,

    Thanks for the reply.

The burner is set to 16x, which is the max.

Usually, 4Gb would take about 15-20 minutes.

I looked for a driver on the web and all I could find was this>

    http://tinyurl.com/57z35q

This is firmware. It's the only Philips item on the driver list at the DELL site for my computer (Dell Dimension 9150).

I tried installing it using Device Manager, but I can only browse as far as the folder that I downloaded and expanded it into. Device Manager cannot "see" it in the folder, if you know what I mean.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    D.
