What is the best PS3 to buy at moment

    Folks,

You may have guessed from the name that I am a 360 owner but mine has died for the third time since purchase in Dec 06 (16 months if you don't want to count). I am tired of having no console for long periods and have decided to bite the bullet and buy a PS3.

Which one should I be looking for. I want wireless controllers. Do they all come with HDMI port. The ability to access my eircom wireless broadband is a necessity. I am leaning towards Gran Turismo deal as I had all others on the PS2 and loved them. Loved Forza 2 on 360 also and am hoping it is as good. Do I need to buy extras not given in the normal bundle. Who is giving the best deal at the moment, Gamestop or Xtravision or other (the store formally known as Virgin !).

What is the common problem on them. Just read another thread detailing failure to read discs and the person had to deal with the store and not Sony. Are they a pain to deal with (Sony) if anything goes wrong. Is the online ability ok or very laggy. Opinions of COD4 lag would be appreciated as this works well for me on the 360. 360 is ok on 2Mb eircom line, is that enough for most PS3 gaming.

Any input on the best purchase at the moment in the world of PS3 would be appreciated.

from my understanding of sony, is that there policy is to replace before repair. Now replacement might be a refurb but still its better then waiting 4 weeks for repair.

Me, and a good few of my mates all have PS3's since launch and none of us have had any trouble whatsoever with em.

They all come both HDMI and WI-FI enabled and come with a wireless controller which charges off of the PS3's onboard USB ports.

Online, is fine for me on my 3Mb line (get yourself a copy of WarHawk ;))

Don't freak out when you switch it on, and it DOESN'T sound like a hoover  (ahhh, the mellow hum of PS3)

    Actually I think the 360 sounds more like a hair-dryer :p
*Tips hat to Sony for making a quiet unit.*

As far as I'm aware there's no different models to choose from these days.

All PS3 controllers are wireless, with built in rechargeable battery as standard. All current PS3s come with a 40 Gig hard drive. All have wireless and network ports as standard. All come with a HDMI port.

The only thing they don't come with is a HDMI cable. Everything else you need is out of the box. So the only thing you need to think about is if there's a free game included or whatever.

Sorry for hi-jacking this thread somewhat but where is the best place to buy a PS3 for value and after-sales,etc? Also do PS2 games work on it?Thanks!

Backwards compatibility is not implemented with the current 40GB model of the PS3. It's possible that it could be implemented entirely in software at some point in the future (the EU 60GB ones are half software, half hardware) but Sony have no plans to do so and it's therefore unlikely to be currently in development.

Actually the European 60Gb PS3 backwards compatibility is completely software emulated. Only the launch JAP/US versions had the PS2 Emotion chip installed, which proved too expensive to manufacture, hence why Europe got stuck with the lesser software emulation (not that I've ever had any problems with it mind).

Someone from Sony recently stated that they underestimated the Demand for the 80Gb version (Also backwards compatible) and that they may re-introduce it at some stage. Cant remember what site I read it on though :o

Rumours (most likely true) have it that the 80GB PS3 available now in North America is coming here sometime during the summer. I know that the 80GB PS3s have PS2 backwards compatibility through software emulation, but I don't know if the Euro 80GB PS3s will have it, although it makes sense for them to if they're the same model. For me, the size of the HDD doesn't matter because you can just replace the hard drive yourself. At the moment I'm just looking to find which PS3 has the best backwards compatibility before I import, because I don't want to wait for the new Euro model only to find that it's still gimped compatibility wise. Wish I'd had the money for a 60GB a while back :(

Thanks for the reply folks. One other question relating to the wireless networking. Does the PS3 work on WPA-PSK wireless or does it have to be WEP. For online gaming, do you still need to buy a headset seperatly or does it come in the box.

Looked at Xtravison and Gamestop and the deal appears to be same in each. Which store has been better to deal with when issues arise.

Also, the prices of PS3 games secondhand are a bit high compared to the 360 titles. Gamestop were looking for 70 quid for most secondhands in Newbridge, even ones that were launch titles. None in Xtravision. Might be lack of competition in Newbridge driving this price. Is it the same everywhere else?

Best deal appears to be unit with packaged game + one other from an unseen list in Gamestop for 450 with no HDMI cable and they wanted 30 for that. Drakes Fortune has caught my imagination and I am leaning towards this deal at the moment. Will I get life out of this game or just 2 weeks.

Final thought. Does the PS3 need a lot of cooling. That is, can it go into a TV unit or does it have to be in the open like the 360 in case it overheats and dies (again).

Actually actually. My understanding is that the hardware emulation in the US PS3s has two components; the emotion engine chip and the PS2 GPU. The EU PS3s didn't have the emotion engine for the reason you stated but retained the PS2 GPU while emulating the emotion chip in software. The 40GB models lack the GPU and the software emulation is not present. The emulator could be redesigned to emulate the GPU and be provided in an update- but I've never heard of plans to do this.

I've got mine in a fairly confined unit. The main vents are on the right so I give them as much space as I can. I haven't had any overheating issues at all.

Drakes Fortune is an excellent game i'd recommend you to play it but the only thing is its too short . probably complete it in less than two weeks id say .

That model isn't available in North America. The only model on sale here right now is the 40GB with no PS2 compatibility. The 80GB will, however, be reintroduced in June because of demands for backwards compatibility. I'd assume if it goes to Europe, it'll still have compatibility.

There is a new rumour of an official 40GB GTAIV bundle coming, like the GT5:Prologue bundle.

    http://www.gaming-age.com/news/2008/4/7-10

The box looks legit, but it's not confirmed yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 535 ✭✭✭Zatoichi

So where's the best place to buy it? On-line is usually cheaper but I can't find any site that will ship to Ireland. Game/Gamestop/Xtravision are usually only expensive bundles but I haven't checked yet.

anyone heard anything of the mgs4 bundle with dualshock3 controller?do they have that release here?

Nothing confirmed yet. I don't even think there's been a release date announced for the DualShock 3 in Europe yet (correct me if I'm wrong).

Just get a good custom built PC - stay away from the shops or even Dell, they'll rip you off on highend gaming PCs. A PC can do anything a PS3 can, has higher specifications, HDMI, bluray is available if you want that, and also there is a better selection of games on the PC. You've got wireless controllers. Monitors are higher resolution that TV's unless you get HDTV's which can be used on a PC anyway. Games like Assassin's Creed, are better on the PC than consoles, and I'm not just talking Graphics. There is a whole lot of new gameplay and two exclusive new levels just on the PC version. As well as top games like Crysis, World in Conflict, and Gears of War from last year, none of which are available on the PS3. And also remember, the PS3 you buy now, will be out of date in a few months compared to highend PCs, whereas a PC you can keep improving it and upgrading it.

Pete, This Is The Playstation Forum.
Your post is rather missing the point, because most people here have PCs or Laptops anyway. Recently I priced up a high spec custom build PC (the way I wanted it), with Blu-Ray high end graphics etc etc. Total cost was over €3k.

Okay. Was in 'GAME' today. Pre-Order PS3 + GTA IV = €439 (available 29th April) plus their silly vouchers. Sounds a bit expensive

For €455, Zavvi are offering: PS3, Six Axis Controller, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, 'ANY' other PS3 game (no list), and one Blu Ray Disc (from either Spiderman 3, Casino Royale or Ghost Rider). . . . This sounds a good deal as the 'any other game' can include GTA IV when it is available next week.

My birthday is the 6th May. Hehehe
TBH, I am getting it mainly for the Blu Ray (it can play AVCHD discs too) and will upgrade the HD to store my HiDef home movies.

    Boo

They tac'd on €40 bloody euro.

They did? Play.com have it for €420, of course you can't buy it from them...

I'll probably end up getting the GTA4 package.

I'm waiting for the next Tesco offer.

But it was the GTA 4 (or GTA IV), we were talking about. It is not actually out till this day week.

So unless Zavvi change their offer; for €455 you can get:
    • PS3 40GB
    • SIX AXIS CONTROLLER
    • GRAN TURISMO 5 PROLOOGUE
    • GRAND THEFT AUTO IV
    • 1 BLU RAY DISC from either: SPIDERMAN 3 or CASINA ROYALE or GHOST RIDER

I concur. Don't buy an orange. Buy three bananas. There are more of them and more is better.

Some games certainly are better on the PC, but frankly the majority of the console conversions to PC are utter crap. The PC can do anything the PS3 can do, but it doesn't. I bought the PS3 for games that will not be appearing on the PC. MGS4, GTAIV(it'll be on PC some day), LBP, Burnout... and I reckon we also have yet to see the full extent of what the cell processor is capable of- there'll be some eye opening stuff in the next couple of years.

All of the above aside, I have just bought a new PC- but it's not going to make my PS3 obsolete.

Is this a good deal??

Xbox 360 pro system(i.e. with hard drive and HD cables) for sale with 7 games GTA4, Half Life Orange Box, Bioshock, Halo3, Scene It (cool movie quiz game), Gears of War and Project Gotham racing. will also sell without some/all games at discounted price
    Price: 250 all games

    What's the 'Pro System'??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,174 ✭✭✭✭Captain Chaos

    This is the PS3 forum,

but anyway the 360 pro he is selling is the one with the 20gb hard drive, the new 360 pro comes with a 60gb hard drive.

You can get the new pros for €180. I would not be too quick into getting an old pro model, I'd say you have a 1 in 3 chance that it will get a RROD and it is outside the 3 year warrenty soon if its a launch day console.

If you got all those games for 250 it would be a great deal, leads me to believe the console is dodgy.
