Lightweight Luggage

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, mods please feel free to move.

My bf and I are going to Italy in June for 3 weeks and plan to travel around by train.

The only thing is, the suitcases that we have at the moment are actually quite heavy and that's before you even put anything in it.

Because the weight limits on airlines are becoming really strict I was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent range/brand of luggage that is as light as possible.

We'll need to bring the usual clothes, toiletries etc but also want plenty of leeway to bring stuff back. Don't want to be half way through our hols and realise that we are going to have to start dumping stuff. It happened last year coming back from Cuba and we had to dump about €50 worth of sun creams just so we wouldn't go over Ryanairs limit.

Has no one any suggestions? I know other people must have come up against the luggage restrictions before.

    p.s. sorry for the bump

Electric I can't offer you a brand name and not sure where you're based but there is a luggage shop on the outside of the Ilac Centre in Dublin and another in Whitewater in Newbridge that do luggage that's cheap and quite tough.

My sister got a massive bag on wheels that's kind of like a huge gym bag but big enough for a body to be hidden in for €20 about a month ago. It weighs little or nothing empty and survived Spanish and Irish baggage handlers perfectly.

Dunnes also do those fold up bags that are a bit like raincoats that go completely flat and you could put in your case on the way out for bringing back extra stuff. I wouldn't trust those would be tough enough to be checked in though..

    HTH..

Take a really big sports bag with you to take onboard (as well as a smaller bag if necessary), these are never weighed and it'll be an insurance so you don't have to dump any gear. Of course you can't bring liquids on this, but its great for loads of other stuff.

That way you won't go over the limit, it's sick to be paying out €€ for silly little things like that
