    Hi.

I'm hoping someone can help me here.

I drive a 50cc scooter, a couple of mornings it conked on me while driving. this was a bit unusual as its been going fine this past while , no problems at all. might have to kick start it rather than using the electric start some mornings when its cold but that's it.

basically now after its conked, i can't get it going again. the electric start gives no sign of life, and the kick start i can't even seem to kick down, it's almost like its jammed or something.

would anyone have any ideas on what might be up with her, or anything i could do, as i can't really afford a call our charge atm.

thanks guys. i really appreciate it.

You seem to know your stuff but have you tried holding the throttle open when you kickstart it?

But if the electric start is gone, then maybe your battery is due a charge. You can buy a charger for €40 upwards, just leave it overnight.

I've just given the obvious answer, it may be well be something more complicated

Is it a Peugeot? I had a Peugeot Vivacity 50cc and it constantly cut out on cold mornings at traffic lights and it seems it was a well know problem on that model.

Maybe repost in the motorbike forum, it'd probably be quicker than waiting for this thread to be moved. Beyond that, i'm afraid I know absolutely nothing about scooters!

If the elec start is doing nothing, your battery is most likely flat.

What make is it, and what two stroke have you been using? (low grade 2t causes coking up, which is why Im asking)

thanks for the replies. it's a katana 02. don't think the batterys flat, been using it every day without problems and i'd been driving it 5 - 10 mins when it cut out. (i was so lucky it cut just as i got to where i needed to be.) i have had to replace the battery myself a couple of times since i've had it, if it's been left sitting too long, but once i'm using it every day its always fine.

micmclo i don't really know my stuff that much at all,. and i know i'm totally gonna embarrass myself now but what do u mean about holding the throttle open? i barely even know what the throttle is :(

thx so much for your help.

You guys are missing the fact that the kickstart was working, and now isn't!

Holding the throttle (twistgrip accelerator) wide open is the technique to start a flooded engine. Don't think this applies here.

OP, could it be stuck in gear? Oops, realised it's probably automatic!

Sorry I can't be more helpful. Suggest googling with make, model, kickstart ....

Ah come on now, you know well what a throttle is.:)
It's the right-hand side handlebar and it's how you change the power.

Maybe you call it an accelerator, I learned to drive to tractors before cars so therefore I call it a throttle and so would most people on bikes.

So if you hold it open and kick-start it might work, worth a shot.
But esel has probably got better advice!

thx esel, ya it's automatic. i had someone else (unqualified but also has bike) look at it, and that was his suggestion too, but its automatic.

and ya like i can't even kick the kickstart down, it physically seems to be jammed stuck...

Possibly something wrong in the gearbox? You might have to get it to a workshop, or call in to one and ask if they have an idea what the problem might be before you bring it in. If they sound like they know the problem, they might be prepared to collect the bike if you are going to give them the work. Ask for a quote first though!

[edit] This may not work as it's automatic, but it would be worth your while trying to push start it.

Definitly get a quote before any repair work.
And imo a six year old scooter is pretty old. Ok, someone will post they have a ten year old and it's still perfect but my scooter and anyone else that I know had one realy start to have issues after 4-5 years.

Once you find out the problem, just remember there may be a chance that you're better off getting a new one then spending hundreds repairing your 2002 scooter.

    Best of luck anyway :)

Same thing happened to me when i owned a scooter, turned out to be siezed, the piston melted to the cylinder and i had to get it re-bored and a new piston and whatever goes with that, cost nearly 500 euro to sort but you will have a quicker scooter when its sorted if its the same problem cause it goes from 49cc to 60cc

^ You could be right, it might be seized.

OP, is it a 2-stroke (smoky exhaust), and if so, did you keep the lube oil tank topped up?

When you say it 'conked out' when driving, did it come to a fairly sudden stop, almost like you had braked hard with the back brake? If it did, you could well have a seized engine.

If it is seized, all may not be lost. It could be major, like bitemybanger's experience, or relatively minor. If it's a 2-stroke, you could remove the spark plug and drizzle some 2-stroke oil into the cylinder. Only about 20-30ml max. This might help to unseize the piston if you try pushing it. But I know that with cars, an automatic can't be push started unless it is towed at about 30kmh. I am not advising you to try this! You just might get the engine to turn over, by running with it until you get to your max running speed, then jump onto the saddle. Again, as it's automatic, you may not even be able to start pushing it if the engine is seized.

thx for the replies. i'm hoping it hasn't siezed as i'm a new mortgage holder and just don't have the 4-500 to be spending on the bike. in that case, i'd be tempted to just go out and get a bicycle instead, but i'm literally just after renewing my insurance a week ago..

to be honest i don't know what type of oil it is. the boys in the bike shop know me and my bike and they just give it to me when i go in, would i be off in saying that it's 4 stroke?

    i'm awful i know.

and i try to keep it well topped up with oil, although i can be forgetful at times, but i think there's a good bit in it atm... :)

Katanas are commen enough bike, if you think it is siezed then try asking somewhere like cutyspares if they would have a full 2ndhand engine, you could easly get a good engine off a crashed/stolen scooter. But for the minute, get down to a local bike mechanic and ask them if it is seized!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Thread moved from Motors to Motorbikes and merged with the separate thread the OP started over there

@Anan1 - It's generally not best practice to double post in multiple fora

lol micmclo, ya i know what that is - i just didn't know what that was called. On second thoughts i'm sure i heard it called that before, just when u said to open the throttle i thought u said something else. see u do learn something new every day :)

and yes i know i'm looking myselff look like a silly little clueless girl :o lolll

thx again everyone for all the advice, gonna ring someone in the morn. cheers

Where abouts are you/is the bike?

May be able to give it a look tomo if you aren't too far. I used to have a scooter a while ago an I'm fairly handy... It may just be a jammed kick-start... Would be pretty cool if it was :)
