Chorus in Thurles: MMDS or True Cable?

    Hey folks

Was having an arguement with a friend over which chorus cable I have. He said that Thurles is fed from an MMDS mast at the moment (he seems to be in the know!) though I thought that I currently have the true cable variety as dont see any chorus aerials around.

Could anyone clear this up further?

    Thanks a lot.

You get a mmds signal which is fed into the cable network via an central mmds mast.

usually it means less channels, no analogue (or else only 66 Digital channels) and no broadband.

How difficult is it to update a system like that to "cable" presumably if there is a central mast somewhere, this would just need to be removed and the network joined to the cable network?

all the main hubs like clonmel, thurles cable systems are fed by mmds.
but in Thurles most of that area is fed by cable network through out the town.even out in willomere on the outskirts ot thules is all cabled out.
I used to work for Chorus in that area.any probs just post it and i will try and help anyone that is in trouble.I would have a good knowledge of mmds, cable problems so just ask and i will help anybody that wants help

The MMDS systems are built like any other cable network. If they manage to get fibre near to the MMDS system they can switch it over. The amps would have to be changed out for two way versions also. The biggest cost usually in switching over is the civils which can run very high.

I thought I had come across a post or two on the broadband forum which mentioned Chorus surfnet broadband or whatever it's called being available in Thurles. I may have read a post about Clonmel too.

Is there definetely no cable broadband in Thurles??

As far as I know (someone living there told me) they have Chorus BB? I stand corrected if wrong.

Thurles has a cabling system but they also use MMDS, interestingly the boxes mostly used around the country for MMDS work on the cabling system in Thurles.

Clonmel, Thurles and Kilkenny got an mmds feed at their headends but additionally an extra broadband feed.

Just to add another question to this:

Is Thurles analogue only? or is possible to get chorus digital is the area?

Parents were thinking of upgrading as had basic chorus package for too long!

Chorus Digital is available in Thurles town, friend of mine has it and is happy with it, it appears to be a bit more reliable than the analogue.

I can't understand analogue being anything less than perfect on a Cable system the size of Thurles. WTF?

Cheers mate. Yeah thats what I was thinking too but someone said to me that it was analogue only and that put doubts in my head. Have to agree that singal we get at time is fairly poor. Been half tempted to switch to sky in hope of improvement.

The main problem I had with Chorus/UPC analogue service was channels freezing or showing invalid card messages etc., most of them probably just required the engineer to reset the box at the head-end BUT unless they got three complaints they would just offer to book an appointment for the engineer to call the following week!

Not sure of the exact cost of UPC digital, but SKY+ with 2 packs at 22 Euro is cheaper than the analogue in Thurles which is 26.99 Euro. (Though with UPC you do get Setanta included)

Yeah well used to channels freezing (think it was rte1 that was frozen for a whole day last week) and used to get the invalid card messages on discovery and those channels too. I'm hoping their digital service is better too as parents decided against sky+ and have put in an order to upgrade to chorus digital as it only a few euro dearer for quite a lot more channels.

I heard stories about their poor customer support but would anyone have a rough guess how long it would take for an upgrade to take place. Order would have went through yesterday I presume.
