VIP promotions have confirmed that Gomez v McDonagh will fight for the Irish title on 23 May 2008 at Wigan, Lancashire.

I'll be there but is anyone interested in this fight after what happened last time!?

I really rated gomez before that fight but it was a disgrace, i remember watching it and been ashamed of him, and Mcdonagh is terrible, they should not be allowed to fight again. maybe i'll try to fight the winner! and i'll make it my business to knock them out too.

Course they should be allowed to fight again but to be honest they are both poor fighters, Gomez if he had more committment to the sport could have gone a lot further, im sure there will be interest in the fight but probably for all the wrong reasons. Boyle Sports are a bloody DISGRACE after what happened the last time these 2 fought with false accussations of big money being laid on McDonagh and Gonez throwing the fight which proved on all counts to be false.

So what happened in the end... did they get their purses, and what was the official explanation?

    WHY?
gomez just gave up for no reason, decided he just did not want to fight, i was ripped off by the sham and so was lots of others, nobody should support this shiite.

    Here Here !!
Gomez dropped his gaurd in the hope of being caught with one big shot, only mc Donagh took about 4 shots to knock Gomez enough off balance.
Gomez , not hurt refused to get up.... totally out of the blue.
You dont give up when you're in such a positive position.
Anyway surely you would just not come out for the next round , ... who in their right mind would throw their chin out like that if they wanted out !!

Thats what i saw anyway imo.

thats not exactly what happened but close enough. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XiJYi3ZEuOU

My understanding is that Boyle sports and many other bookies refused to submit evidence to the enquiry which meant there wasnt really anything that could stick to Gomez - convieniant for both the bookies and the BUI - purses where then handed over undeducted

It was a cheap PR stunt by the bookies and all it did was bring the sport into disrepute. I understand the sentiments towards Gomez but you have to accept that his head obviously was in a different place to where it should have been, a talanted kid but with NO support structures, for anyone who knows his background and his upbringing its no surprise, there was talk of a film being done on his lifestory but im not sure if it ever happened, mabey someone else can chip in if the know?

It was so sad to see a fighter of the calibre of Michael Gomez lowered to this type of rubbish. He was such a talent and he has thrown it away so many times. The fact that he was even fighting that night surprised me, I knew something was wrong when he was fighting there, but still didn't expect what happened.
It just shows how important it is in boxing to have good people around you from day one.
It remember Iron Mike when he first appeared, and the way he respected Gus D'amato so much, but once he died and Don King moved in for the con, it was never going to be the same Tyson. Even the great Roy Jones joined King after publicly stating that he would never get involved with him.
It just shows you how clever Lennox Lewis was.

Paul, Gomez gave up because he knew he was getting beat and knew that McDonagh was able to take his best. Pure gamesmanship. No deals, no conspiracies, no betting scams, just Gomez not having the heart to keep going

Bren all joking aside but Mcdonagh is terrible and probably the weakest puncher i,ve ever seen, i'd fight him tonight if i was asked too and give up if i lost!

Mcdonagh was hardly serving up a punishment to Gomez, Gomez just did not want to know and as far as im concerned ripped the fans off, also whats to say things will be any different now? i would not pay hard earned cash to go to see a quitter like that. He's everthing i despise in sports. and i was raving about him before the fight because he was actually quite talented, i thought he could be as big as Hatton..but he does not have ricky's heart..

Spot on Paul. He doesn't have the heart. I saw Gomez fight Johansson for the super feather title a year or two ago and he almost seemed to give up in that one too. He allowed himself to be hit unnecessarily. Peter was steadily beating Gomez and Gomez's shots weren't doiing the damage, nor were they disheartning Peter. Gomez knew this and Peter was coming on strongger and stronger

Thanks 4 that, rubbish quality production but you can get the general jist of it, a superb story if there every was one for hollywood

I couldn't agree that Gomez gave up against Johansson. Quiet the opposite, he seemed to give it absolutly everything he had. He was running out of steam in rounds 4,5 and 6 yet he started each of those rounds like a train and hung on bravely at the end. He was knocked down in 6, got back to his feet and the ref stopped it when he was staggered almost immediatly after. Gomez almost lost plot here and pushed the ref a couple of times.

Very dodgy crowd following him. Looked like there was going to be a mini riot for a while. Anyway while I don't have much time for him I was delighted to see his change in attitude since the McDonagh fiasco.

what makes you think his attitude has changed?

I am not saying I'm convinced he has changed his attitude at all. Just disagreeing that he quit against Johansson. Some of it is here on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy5M9CEZrpU He definitely gave it his all here. I'd say he realised it was last chance saloon for him.

I think with Gomez anything can happen. If he were to find himself making no headway against a limited fighter like McDonagh again I could well see him walking away like last time. He doesn't have the ambition or a career carefully planned out like say Bernard Dunne, more of a fly by the seat of his pants attitude! Totally unpredictable.

I still wouldn't mind seeing a rematch with McDonagh though. I reckon that is a fight Gomez really wants to win. It would be interesting to see if he could pull it off. Based on what he showed against Johansson I think he would, probably by a stoppage with in 6.

no I agree with you that he didnt give in against Carl.

I'll probably go to the fight aswell - Wigan is only 20 minutes away from me in Manchester

yeah they are heading a card at the Robin Park Centre in Wigan - its beside the JJB - Gomez still command quite a following over here and there it will get decent coverage - plus its the night before the Hatton fight and with 50,000 boxing fans in a city only 20 minutes away I can see many of them (and probably myself!) taking the trip down the M62 to have a look and get in the mood for it. On thing you can bank on for a Gomez fight is excitement and the other is that the judges dont need to score the rounds because they are NEVER needed.

It could actually be on SKY but will definately be on Channel M - which most SKY subscribers should have for free.

Channel M - is the Manchester channel - they show good local boxing on it and have a good weekly magazine programme called "Seconds Out" and they have loads of Manchester and Liverpool based boxers on the couch for a half interview - usually good stuff and most of the guys from Bobby Rimmers and Anthony Farnells gyms are regulars - Michael Gomez, Anthony Crolla etc

Its on SKY channel 203 over here but my brother has it in SLigo on his SKY package aswell - anyone else got it?
