.045 to .105 is generally the "standard" set. I believe the correct term for the set with this guage is Medium Light. :)

I used 95-35 sets for years and years but now find it more comfortable to play 115-50

Are you moving up the instrument ladder, Ste? ;)

I snagged a Tanglewood Rebel 4k bass on Ebay yesterday for €80. Irish seller too so no postage either. I know it's a beginner jobby but if I like it and decide a bass is a necessary piece of kit then the black stained Bacchus would have to find a home in my house. Didn't really want to spend lots and then not like bass. Is this logical?

Perfectly so. Right up until you mentioned the black stained Bacchus, then I felt your logic developed flaws :p

Anyway, sounds like a good deal. The most popular sets of strings would be 95s, 100s and 105, I suppose the best bet would be maybe a set of 100s, see what you think of them and move the direction you feel most comfortable with afterwards. The webstrings bass strings are ok for the money, certainly when you compare them to spending €25-30 in town for one set.

I've seen one of those come apart at the neck joint due to poor glueing so I wouldnt chance heavy strings on it.
