He was good in Tigerland and Phone Booth. I liked his role in Intermission a lot. I wouldn't agree with your opinion OP. Welcome to boards, enjoy.

Tigerland his best performance in my opinion

He's pretty good in Cassandra's Dream despite the accent.

He wasn't bad in phonebooth or SWAT .

Not bad for a working class oik from castleknock ;)

What's a working class oik? And in which film did he play one?

I agree with Tigerland, by the way. Think he was great in that.

For some reason I do forecast that when his Hollywood hype finally dies down Farrell will come to be typecast as "the Irish guy".

He has frequently played "Irish" people convincingly but often when it comes to playing other nationalities just doesn't seem to have the knack? Take his Macedonian accent in "Alexander" for example, or his British accent in "The New World". Just doesn't do it for me unfortunately.

Compare all this to his guest star appearance in "Scrubs" where he played what I would consider to be a very accurate portrayal of a typical "Irish guy".

I dont particularly rate him as an actor TBH, with only Tigerland and Phone Booth getting pass marks from me.

Glad to hear it. As I stated earlier, I did feel his accent was very accurate during that performance.

i think that was because whatever his name was in that show he was basically just playin colin farrell, it was good to see us shows portrayin an irishman properly for a change

I don't rate him generally, but thought he was surprisingly good in 'A home at the end of the world'.

I can't help but wonder whether the OP had any intention of backing up their assertion, because frankly there's not a lot of "discussion" to be had from the subject line other than "he's not very good"/"yes he is".

Personally, I'm not sure what his best performance has been although In Bruges is getting good reviews and he is generally accepted to have been quite good in that. I haven't watched every film he's been in, because frankly some of them have been pretty shaky (Miami Vice? Daredevil? SWAT?) but when you talk about a generally crummy film like Miami Vice or SWAT it's hard to say whether he's specifically crap or whether the role he's given is just so 2-dimensional he can't do anything with it. His performance in Phone Booth was reasonably good as well, so I don't think you can just say "Intermission is the only thing he's ever been any good in".

I'm pretty sure he spoke in his normal accent in Alexander. Oliver Stone wanted all the Macedonians in the film speak with an Irish or Scottish accent. He didn't seem to make much effort to hide his accent in The New World either so I assume that was with Malick's approval.

I thought Alexander would be Farrell's make-or-break role and that if anyone could get a good performance out of him it was Stone so I was quite horrified by how bad he was in it.

I thought he was great in Intermission though.

Have you seen Tigerland? Very good film, and his American accent was good enough.

daredevil for me, he stole the show in that move

He hasn't been in many films that have actually pushed his acting. Phone Booth and In Bruges are examples of when he is on top form.

He doesnt play an irish man in minority report and he's the best thing in the film!

Actually at one point in the film he does say he's from Dublin.

Intermission FTW! What a film. He's been good in other movies but he played that role superbly. For me it's the one I've most enjoyed him in.

    Tigerland, he was superb.

    Phonebooth, he was superb

    Intermission, he was very good

    In Bruges, he was good

    Alexander, aaaahhhhhhhh

He turns in a good preformance, in fairness. It was hard but he got into Nicole's character really well.

Did you know Farrell lost his virginity at the age of 16 when his father brought him to a brothel.

He's a handsome fella but I also heard his 'member' is only 2 inches long.

Alas, as my man says, it's how you use it that counts.

Farrell wasn't bad in the 'Recruit' alongside Pacino now that I remember it.

Tigerland and Phonebooth are his best two.

Then In Bruges is a very close next.

Intermission I only liked really, It wasnt as good as the Previous three.

SWAT, Daredevil and Alexander are all too bad for me

I refuse to watch a Miami Vice remake!!!

lol, I refuse to watch anything directed by Michael Mann.
also anything with a linkin park song as the soundtrack does not bode well.

Watch the 'Recruit' mate, Farrell is on good form and Pacino is in it too.

    *gasp*

Okay so Miami Vice needed a better script but Mann is still one of the best directors out there.

I don't really watch films which rely on special fx etc.

But he is good at what he does.

I think maybe you're thinking of someone else. Michael Bay perhaps?

I was actually surprised at his good performance in In Bruges. But come to think of it, he is generally quite good in other films too (Minority Report, Phone Booth etc...). One of those actors who gets the kind of press that you automatically assume he is just going to star in ****e, but as an actor he is quite adept. He has starred in some rubbish for sure (I remember profoundly disliking the Recruit) but what actor hasn't?

most people i know like the movie Phonebooth yet dont rate Farrell at all which IMO is a huge contrdicton as he is on camera (Often alone) for around 90% of the film. Although Keifer has a great voice and Forest whitaker is as always superb as a supporting actor, Farrell actually carries that movie.

Farrell is superb in Phone booth and the 'people you know' are truly defining the word 'contradiciton' with their opinions.

    *mind boggling*

Really impressed me in Phone Booth. He was fantastic in In Bruges too, but it was really the chemistry between himself and Gleeson that made the role. Haven't seen Tigerland yet and only saw half of Intermission and never bothered to watch the rest as what I saw didn't do very much for me.

Interesting you say that. I think I would have liked this movie better if it *had* been called "Phone Box".

Similarily "Airplane" would have been better had it been called "Aeroplane", "Drugstore Cowboy" would have been vastly improved with the title "Pharmacy Cowboy" and if Michael Moore had called his "Canadian Bacon" the correct name "Sliced Ham" I'm convinced he would have got more feature film offers and Charlton Heston would still be alive today.

    :(

I thought he was excellent in Tigerland. He was good in Intermission, but I didn't really like the film. He's made some real stinkers too, like SWAT and Miami Vice.

In Bruges looks fantastic, probably wont get a release over this way though. I hope he stays away from action blockbusters, he's completely wasted on them. He should look at the likes of Leo di Caprio, who has shed his young Hollywood heart-throb rep, and has some really meaty roles now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Holsten

Yeah he will always be Lehiff to me.

He should stick to playing scummers in comedies, funny as hell.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 435 ✭✭The Denouncer

Yes SWAT, The Recruit, Alexander, The New World, Miami Vice..not good. Colin Farrell didn't impress me at all in those. Intermission and In Bruges - good, playing a Dublin man. I haven't seen Tigerland though I hear he's excellent in it, but he has starred in too much crap and can't seem to do a non-Irish accent. That's would be my definite opinion if I hadn't seen Phone Booth in which he is excellent and has a NY accent which seems pretty good. So the Jurys still out in my opinion, he needs perhaps to get a better agent.

Yeh, i reckon thats his best performance, although i still think he's slightly under-rated as an actor.
He's put in a few very good turns, its just his role selection is terrible. I'll be looking forward to seein him in the new Woody Allen effort.
