i'm setting up an artist website.

i'm thinking: paypal transaction then allow mp3 download.

anybody got any advice on how to do this?

Have you looked at the paypal website? There is great and easy to read info there!

Have you considered distributing through garageband.com or downloadmusic.ie

The model youre looking at building is outdated. Building the infrastructure to sell the music, promote the site that you build, etc, etc. You can leverage established sites and use them as a vehicle for sales. I'm not a music industry expert and maybe there isn't enough to made selling individual tracks.
