Well, to open, in an interview with John O`Shea the other night he brought up the issues of whether Nazi Germany should have been given the Olympics at least 4 times in the programme as if it was a current event

As many a war criminal has said in their own defence, it was all a long time ago.....

Anyway, anyone else agree the show is awful?

Vincent Browne is one of the best journalists in the country. He brought up the Nazi Games in comparison to the upcoming games because the human rights abuses happening now and those that happened then are comparable. It was relevant, and it completely stumped the (seemingly out of his depth) panel member.

He asks the tough questions much more often than other reporter, and does so more directly. He has done more for journalism in this country than any other person I can think of, setting up his mag to foster investigative journalism in Ireland, persueing Haughey in full glare of his party. Numerous other /infamous moments of journalistic excellence that inspired me and surely others to take in interest in reporting.

Saying that, I dont think he Nightly News show does him justice. The time limitations stop him getting to the crux of the issue in the manner that he does in less constrained circumstances. I'd prefer to see the show as a weekly, or twice weekly hour+ long panel debate, although that would be similar to Primetime. The daily billing causes the whole show to be more of an horse for Brownes ego to ride than an in-depth current affairs show.

the daily billing is there because a daily news show was needed.

on many occasion he having a totally different discussion then the one his guest are having, but who needs another reporter asking the same questions, might as well let him ask his curveball questions.

+1. TBH, he's AWFUL on television (remember the Ireland AM slot he did?), good in print and brilliant on radio. OK, he's got his biases like everyone else, but Tonight on RTE Radio 1 was one of the best current affairs programmes on radio, IMHO.

He's the only journalist who asks awkward questions.

Who do you want to hold up as a shining example of hard nosed, getting to the truth style of investigative journalism, Bryan Dobson?

He is as wooden as a gangplank on TV,like a rabbit in the headlights.

The day he asks Mary O'Rourke,Michael D Higgins,Joe Higgins et al,the "difficult" questions is the day I will start to treat him as a semi serious interviewer.

Instead he fawns at them and listens to their auld guff time after time, before asking some poor county councellor the so called "difficult" questions.

He's a great man for doing down the poor dude who is not used to these programmes, but lets the people who waffle away and go into flowery rhetoric and call every thing "important" get away with it!!!

And these are the people who ran the country for the last ten or so years.

he hounded mary o rouke about whether she believed bertie and didn't believe she didn't folow the tribunal, although you can see he too pally with all these people.

Arse boxing as Tommy Lyons famously said, thats all that was, arse boxing.

Has he ever really grilled her on the bollxio she made of the Eircom flotation-No.

Has he ever told that little leprechaun Michael D to shut the fcuk up and remember that 98% of the population want action on home affairs, not constant anti US rhetoric on Iraq-No.

Has he ever told Red Joe that his brand of politics went down the pipes in 1994 and there are plenty of jobs there for everyone if they would only get off their fat arses and look for them-No.

has he ever told Red Joe that the 42% taxpayers of this country are fed up of supporting wasters who depend on the state for everything yet manage 42" plasma TVs two holidays a year, every weekend in the boozer tonking the pints and outside sukin the fags like there was no tomorrow--No No No

When he does,he might get some kudos from me.

well i think you've got a problem with his and red joes politics not his journalism, thats diffrent forum.

A journalist suggesting a politician is doing his job in the wrong way? eh. Theyre there to criticise how a politician is doing their job, not tell them how to do their job or make decisions.

Get over it. You dont like Red Joe, his policies have nothing to do with this thread. Grow up and make a new thread in politics if you want to discuss it.

when bruton was on last night he said, he wan'ted to open the buses to competition browne pointed out that they 've never get that past their obvious labour coalition partner

when sen alex white said he wanted troops out of shannon, he said that fine but how could you possible get that done esp while in coaltion with either ff or fg?

when norris stated support for obama, as some sort of progressive anti-war person, browne asked do really support someone who has openly said he would bomb and invade
    pakistan

when anybody says anything about gangland killings, he said well, those murders pale in comparasion to burgularies and minor assaults which makes up 80% of the crime. -he's like a broken record on this.

Excuse me Sir!! excuse me please!!I'm discussing how VB handles people like Red Joe and I have listened to numerous programmes in which he treats RJ as a lovable eccentric who likes to think he is witty.

I, on the other hand note that his policies and rhetoric are so far out of date that ,well perhaps ,that indeed it is laughable.

Browne never takes the guy to task, and fleshes out the end result of his hair brained schemes.

I would strongly suggest you don't make further accusations of that tone against me Sir.

    I've seen him grill Joe.

Maybe you were too busy climbing into your 42% tax bracket high horse?

I'm not Browne's biggest fan but your ridiculous ranting is pathetic

Anytime I have heard him deal with RED JOE, he treats him like in an avuncular joshing way without teasing out the true extrapolation of his hairbrained policies.

Maybe you have heard differently, but I am merely articulating what I have heard.

I have to agree with the timbre of Flutter's argument that Vincent Browne can give Joe Higgins an easy ride. This dates back to the days of his Tonight with VB programme on Radio 1, and the reconstructions of tribunal evidence. Higgins would often be a guest on the programme, and, tbh, every time it sounded like...

VB: "Isn't it astonishing what <the issues were of the day>"
JH: "It is. This is a financially corrupt society and <repeat to fade> "

But, does Vinnie just pander to whoever is his guest at the time?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,575 ✭✭✭✭FlutterinBantam

To a certain extent DMC that is the failing of the man.

I used to love the 2200 slot with VB for entertainment value ,but I feel i can be objective enough to see what was going on.

Vinnie had certain regular guests,Red Joe,Midlands Mary, some geezer with a law practice out in Walkinstown who's name escapes me(FF TD)The lovable leprechaun Michael D.
Then he would have some less experienced public reps, probably genuine people from all parties who do the donkey work, but are inexperienced in such shows.

He would gently josh RJ and allow him to spout the out of date rhetoric the public didn't buy, ad nauseum.great repartee banging off each other like Morcambe and frikken Wise.

Then he would turn on the inexperienced dude and bark questions at him/her without letting them finish and generally pulp them with a barrage of stuff and argument that would be difficult to refute given the circumstances.

Thats not good journalism in my opinion, thats showboating.

I gave an example of him calling a left wing senator out on his focus on foreign policiy issue what more do you want?

anyway, it better that then bertie in the dail, did you see when joe higgins asks bertie the time and bertie replies,

YOUR POLICIES ARE FAILURE, YOU ARE FAILURE, GO BACK TOO THE USSR, YOU ARE A CAST OFF FROM THE 70's DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO HAVE NO JOBS ANYMORE.

now that's would call a ridiculous attitude to 'red'.

He's like a mahogony table presenting the news.Terrible on-screen presence.

Well you and I are not going to agree on much,I would concur with that reply 100%.Seems like the good burghers of Tallaght agree with me too:rolleyes:

Any BOT Browne on TV is painful... entertaining on radio,if a bit shallow, but unwatchable on TV.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 870 ✭✭✭Pen1987

Tallaght? If you were refering to Higgins electoral constituency, he ran in Blanchardstown.

If you had of phrased your first point the same way as your phrased your second it would of made for a much stronger argument, I felt you were focused totally on Red Joe irrelevant policies, the point you made following that I would partially argee with. Still a far better journo than 99% of the Irish media.
