Can anyone please tell me where I can get info on filming (documentary/news style) in public places?

Are any licences or permits required?

    Thanks

    The short answer is no...

As far as I know, you should be ok filming on publicly owned streets/roads/etc just as long as you are not creating an obstruction or harassing people, or simpler things like that.

Railway/tram stations, on board public transport, and tram lines are have their the companies' by-laws.

I was taking photos inside a train station today and security guard asked me what I'm doing. I had an NUJ press card, which quickly got rid of him, but I know the Irish Rail rule book says it's allowed unless it causes an nuisance (or something similar). Funny enough an Irish Rail staffer came up to me after asking what he wanted, agreeing before I got to talk that there was nothing wrong what I was doing.

Be aware of places which are not publicly owned but allow access to the public (indoor or outdoor shopping centres, carparks, some open estates and apartment complexes etc.

As a rule, if your target is on private land stick to public land and film your target from there.

Can I ask what type of documentary are you filming and for what?

    Thank you for the advice.

It's a demo project (at the moment, hopefully will turn into something more) about drinking in Irish culture and the effects it has on all concerned.
