    hey,

Its been sometime since i have summited carrantuohill but plans are afoot to take a trip down there soon.

The last approach I took was via devils ladder and we descended a alternate route which brought us past the Mountain Rescue hut and back into hags glen.

This time I would like to take the approach of my last descent via the Mountain Rescue hut.

Can anyone confirm that the route I am talking about is Brother O'Shea's gully? http://www.kerrymountainrescue.ie/routes/brother_osheas.html

    Thanks.

Could be o'sheas, could also be the heavenly gates approach, if that rings a bell?
Both can go past the mountain rescue hut (along with some climbing routes which you presumably didn't descend).

Have you any more info? Did you start your descent heading northwest from the summit? If northwest, you're probably right about it being osheas. If east/northeast, followed later by northwest, probably heavenly gates.

We had traveled SE from the summit heading towards the devils ladder and with a couple of 100m's away from the devils ladder we turned north and traveled in parallel to our assent via the devils ladder
I seem to remember little scrambling and a comfortable descent as opposed to the gale force wind and wet scramble up the devils ladder

Yeah, that sounds like Heavenly gates to me - not looking at a map, but sounds right. You probably want to find info on the heavenly gates approach so.

sounds like the Heavenly Gates route alright, it can be tricky to find the start of the path, from the descent of the summit.
The following book gives the GPS ref for the start of the path.
and is overall an excellent book

"Carrauntoohil & MacGillycuddy's Reeks" guidebook, written by Jim Ryan, and published by Collins
