Active Desktop Recovery Error

    A friend of mine is having problems with an active desktop error on his XP machine.
    His desktop background says "Active Desktop Recovery", there's a button saying "Restore my active desktop" when he clicks this he gets a script error saying something about a file called "desktop.htt". His taskbar constantly flashes on and after a while he loses his taskbar and all his icons, the only way I can open anything is through Task Manager. We've both done loads of google searches but can't find anything to help. He's also tried to turn it off under desktop properties but doesn't work.

    Thanks in advance!

    he must had some spyware on his computer and its courrupted that file now.

    try running start - run - sfc \scannow or sfc /scannow

    this will repair corrupt files from the cd.

    you will need your xp cd.

    Whenever he tries to open a folder after a few seconds the screen goes black and when it comes back the folder has been closed. Its a Dell machine and they never gave him a XP recovery CD. Dell said they could fix it for €50, he's not keen on handing over €50 when it could be a simple procedure he could do himself. But because Dell never gave him a recovery CD that €50 fee should be waived??

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\SafeMode\Components]
    "DeskHtmlVersion"=dword:00000000
    "DeskHtmlMinorVersion"=dword:00000005
    "Settings"=dword:00000001

    This fixes it.
