There is player frequenting our cash games recently who to say is unpopular is an under statement.Ive heard a lot of conversation about players wanting to send him busto.
My question is whether it is +or-EV for that player to be the subject of a witch hunt?

The usual cash game i play, i probably prefer to be liked at the table small club stuff like that you dont really want to be making enemys.

Yet theres another casino open where theres not a regular player base only players falling in and out and most of them are drunk.

I feel its a lot more profitable for them to be out to bust you cause they will call massive bets out of just hoping your bluffing. There is also the fact most of them dont have a clue.

If he didn't know they were after him I would say it's a good thing. If he was aware of it he should leave as he'll think they're bluffing him with a higher frequency then they actually are, which is never a good thing.

It's nice to be nice. There are several people I play with though that I don't like, and there have been occasions when I call only to bust them. Sometimes it works for me, sometimes against. It helps in the decision making though that these are mostly poor players who are just assholes.

Having a good atmosphere at the table is very profitable imo.

On the other hand if you don't care about your popularity it can work to your advantage. I know plenty of people who are just tilted by the presence of someone else at the table. Obv puts them off their A-game.

If people are coming after you, they are not playing optimally and subjectively, so you are inducing everyone else to play worse. Flipside is that fish will not like playing with you.

IMO it is more profitable to have the fish enjoying table time with you than the regs tilting at you.

This is quite interesting to me and i think Luckylloyd makes a valid point. I remember a couple of years ago when the Emporium was newish I used to play there a lot. The standard was appalling and my VERY basic TAG game was profitable. I used to drive in and play for the night and i'd rarely open my mouth other than the standard polite converstion. On account of my tightness, one guy absolutely hated my guts and used to call me down with anything just to try and win pots against me. He was of the 'i hate students' variety (i was finished college!) and it got to a point where i used to wear in a UCD hoodie constantly because it riled him up even more. It was amazing how a person i'd never exchnaged two words with could hate my guts and let it affect his poker game so much (he was pretty bad anyway though.

Generally people will play more cautiously against people they dont like as they are more wary of giving their monies to them, whereas if they are nice, people are like ah shur` what odds!
If peopl ebluff you with a higher frequency, and you are involved in more multi-way pots then it would result in higher variance id imagine, or the flip side resulting in them folding their blidns too easily, and everyone knows the value in live poker is from its looseness rather than 10 TAGs.

There are times when it can be benificial to be liked and times when it certainly helps if someone dislikes you.

I remember when I first started playing a certain player took a stormin dislike to me. It was a definite advantage for me and in the space of a month we played a lot of big pots against each other which thankfully I got the best of.
At the time I was a little more brash at the table so his hatred was probably justified.

I find this an interesting topic and I agree a jolly table is a profitable one.But saying that it only takes one prick to change the dynamics for the worse.
This particular villian is one I find myself getting involved with generally coming out best but when he does win a pot from me my blood boils. Now I pride myself on tilt control but just the fact I even target this individual is a form of tilt.He is a very poor player who will end up in the poor house if he doesnt improve but is currently running very well and since this has happened from the start of his visits he seems to be keeping full time hours. My major gripe is that ive witnessed all sorts of bad ettiquette from him eg. slow rolling ,declaring a hand dead when someone turned over the nuts before saying call and my personal favourite is he thanks the person he wins a pot from.
In my time playing he is the only one who has ever got to me but as I found out it aint just me who detests him.Rant over.Btw he is not from Cork Lazare.
