Myself and my partner wish to go away for a week in May or June and have more or less decided on Malta. Can anyone tell me if they had a good time there, did you book it through budget travel or flights and hotels seperately. Can anyone recommend a particular resort as some of the accomodation looks quite basic. And anything else that's worth knowing. Thanks

My partner and I went to Malta last year and we had a great time. We stayed in the St. Julians Bay area in a hotel called Hotel Juliani. The hotel itself was fantastic and it had wonderful views of the bay. There are so many great restaurants around St. Julians Bay area as well. Our favourite was a place called Poppinos (I think!). There's an area about 10 minutes away from St. Julians Bay where all the bars and clubs are. The name of the place escapes me now but we generally stayed away from this area as we were looking for a more quiet, relaxing holidat.

Other must-do things are the trip to Gozo and Comino and a trip to Valetta (in particular the St. John the Baptist Cathedral.

i was in Malta in February, its not what you expect or at least what i expected. The main island is incredibly built up in an around the valletta area and beyond.

Valletta becomes totally quiet after 6pm, we were there for Carnival but the days it wasn't on everything was closed by 6pm :(

St julians next to Valletta has some great bar and clubs and the west coast of the main island has some nice beaches (golden bay being one) and scenery

I was there about three years ago, and had a great time. It's a lovely island.

With regards accomodation, we stayed at the Luna apartment complex in Mellieha. The apartments were of good standard, didn't have any fault with them. It's in a superb location, overlooking a bay, with a roof-top swimming pool (with loungers, etc) overlooking the sea too. It really was a gorgeous location. The beach is a 5-min walk, and there's a bus stop literally accross the road from the complex, which will take you straight into Valetta. There's a restauraunt and shop on-site, with further eateries just a short stroll down the road.

As for things to do, definitely make the trip accross to Gozo. It's a nice day out. We got the bus, IIRC, to the ferry port, and went accross as foot PAX. On the other side, we hired a car...actually it was more of a safari truck, which you'd need with the quality (or lack thereof) of the roads over there!

We also went on a cruise around the entire country, which can be done in a day. I think they're run by 'Max's tours' or something like that. A great day out, with a guided tour of all the sights on your way around the island. The one we were on stopped off at the other little island of Comino, where you could disembark and go for a swim in the Med. They have a section of the sea cordoned off there, so it's like a swimming pool really! The Med was so clear, yet suprisingly cold!

They have a great way of life there; the Maltese (or some of them, at least) would spend the evenings on the beach, with barbecues and stuff.

We booked through a travel agent, so we had a rep that called at the apartments that we could book everything which was handy. At that time, there was a Friday night (early Saturday morning) flight from Cork to Malta with Air Malta which was extremely handy. Unfortunately, that hasn't re-appeared since, and Air Malta have left Dublin too, except for the odd charter, so you're stuck with Ryanair. That, I suppose, is better than having to connect.

Feel free to ask anymore questions and I'll do my best to answer.
