according to the front page of the Sligo Post the "seedy" "sordid" and "sleazy" practice of Dogging is taking place in our innocent little county! Does this really justify front page news, i mean shock horror: adults are meeting up to have consensual sex in a car!

All dogs can read. They just can't do it out loud, so people generally don't notice.

Does this really justify front page news

It's probably the most exciting news in months.. I mean what else has happened in Sligo recently? Statue graffitied? Rovers lose again? Train delays due to leaves on the line? Rain AND sunshine in the SAME DAY shocker? Man finds hair in sandwich?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 342 ✭✭garth-marenghi

think there was a similiar story a few months ago about online escort(of the female variety, not the ford!)agencies operating a business in sligo, i wonder does the post pay someone to look for these websites, not a bad job:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,797 ✭✭✭bobcar61

I wouldn't have thought it would happen in Hazlewood of all places.

It was in the Sligo Champion a while back, could be nearly 2 years or so when there was an article of Gay Cruising in Doorley Park and that was on the front page.It was some local councillor who was walking with his wife and saw the signs carved into the trees...Shock Horror:eek:

What did the signs say? "Cruisers this way" ?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,797 ✭✭✭bobcar61

From the picture it had in the Sligo Champion it was more like " Gay Cruisin" ->

Sounds a bit horrible really when you think how many people walk past that wooded area and may think of what is going on 10 meters away from them.

There've been escort agencies operating in Sligo & practically every county in Ireland for years now - typing "escorts ireland" into Google is hardly groundbreaking investigative journalism.

I could think of a lot worse things to be going on 10 meters away to be honest.

I still don't think it's worthy of front page.

I know this has nothing to do with Sligo but on the topic of "Dogging" on the website that was mentioned in the Sligo Post,Antrim has 5411 members, thats the second largest number of members behind Dublin...obviously a very popular hobby up in Antrim.

There used to be a time in Catholic Ireland when condoms were so socially unnacceptable, they had to be smuggled into the country hidden in bags of heroin. Now they're on the front pages of local rags. Celtic Ireland is well and truly dead.

Believe it or not, shagging isn't that harmful! They are doing what people do.... Maybe your local priest might have a problem.

I wonder if "Teddy Bears Picnic" is a methaphor for dogging?

If you go down to the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise
If you go down to the woods today
    You'd better go in disguise.

Every Teddy Bear who's been good
Is sure of a treat today.
There's lots of marvelous things to eat
    And wonderful games to play.

Beneath the trees where nobody sees
They'll hide and seek as long as they please
'Cause that's the way the Teddy Bears have their picnic.

If you go down to the woods today
    You'd better not go alone
It's lovely down in the woods today
But safer to stay at home.

    Picnic time for Teddy Bears
The little Teddy Bears are having a lovely time today
    Watch them, catch them unawares
And see them picnic on their holiday.

    See them gaily gad about
    They love to play and shout;
    They never have any care;

At six o'clock their Mummies and Daddies,
Will take them home to bed,
Because they're tired little Teddy Bears.

I'm guessing what Bob was talking about is that in areas like Doorly Park and I think maybe Hazelwood, there have been women raped.*

People dogging around these areas isn't exactly going to make people / women in the area feel safe when out walking by themselves.

    * I don't know of anything happening in these areas in recent times but in has happened before...

Whatever about the dogging, the extent to which the post gave out about consensual sex between adults was the kind of fifties throwback I could do without.

If this "story" is deemed worthy of headline news, then it does not reflect very well on Sligo.

And all those Sligonians that I know prattling on about it being a city.....by the looks of things, the town is more akin to the village of the squinting windows circa 1953.

To be fair there could be much worse headlines! A bit of rumpy pumpy in the woods at night, its hardly breaking news is it?

Its better than the usual shootings, drugs, assaults etc that we could be reading...

I think thats JupiterKids point though , it's a non story

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Yeah, of course it's a non story but it is the Sligo Post.. more than likely a slow news week.

It's exactly the type of story you'd expect to see on the front of any local cheap (or free) paper - e.g The Dundalk Gazette, The Cork Bugle, The Limerick Weekly (*) would have all run this type of story on the front page if it had of emerged there.

    * not actual newspaper names!

Oh My God you have no idea how down I am for that.

    Brilliant!

What else can we bring? empty tubes of astroglide? mirrors with suspicious white powder residue on them? used douche bags?

...can we break in and scatter them throughout the office?

Don't get the wrong impression of me but I went down to Hazlewood(not for a bit of dogging),just been curious.Saw the condoms alright.

Also took a trip down to Doorley Park and saw the carvings on the tree trunks and more condoms(at least they are been safe).

Actually I had to delay my visit to Doorley Park as there was three guys in the bushes "dogging" so I didn't want to interupt and my eyes didn't really want to see it.
