    Hi there,
I have a Dell laptop and the screen has gone blank. I can hear it starting up but the screen remains blank. I can get a picture very briefly if I open and close the lid. Any ideas anyone, please.

Have you tried it with a monitor/tv?

    Hi Tom,
I have not tried that. Do I just connect it to the tv with a usb ?

No. A lot of modern TVs have VGA inputs, so you should be able to get a cable that goes directly from your monitor port on the laptop to the TV (same cable/connection as a monitor).

Some laptops have an s-video port, look for a circular port with several pins on the side of the laptop.

    Hi Tom,
I brought it into work and connected it to one of the monitors and it worked fine.
I shut it down, disconnected the monitor and when I started it up again it worked, no problem at all. ??
Don't know how long for though, could it have just overheated?
    Thank for all your help.

It could be the back light - check the screen carefully from different angles if it happens again

could be a loose connection inside - try open /close case

    or a crash

I brought it to my local(reputable) repairs place and they fitted a new ac inverter. It worked for about an hour. They think the screen might be knackered. It starts up with a pinkish colour and then goes black. In the background you can faintly see whats on the screen. If I close it, the screen works for a second or two. Do you think this is terminal ?? If the screen/backlight is knackered is it worth repairing?? It's only about 2/3 years old. Bugger.....

PS If anyone knows of someone who might be able to repair it, could you be so kind as to pm me with details.

Given the age of the machine if you cant find a solution to repairing the screen it may be just as useful to convert it into a desktop screen. That is, keep it permanently attached to an external monitor and perhaps remove the lid/screen.
