Plus, the meek shall inherit the earth!

Then what are you suggesting? ARe you saying we can trust the FF party as a result of these "startling revelations" (*vom* btw) so they need to be replaced. But who do you replace them with? Wh's the viable alternative? Another FG coallation collapse?

Yes. Time for a change and all that.

Good to see Bertie go, he did some good work (Good Friday agreement and all) but he's become far too arrogant, ten years is too long for someone to lead a country, and I doubt he will be vindicated of wrongdoing by the Mahon tribunal, by the looks of things.

Are you saying we should just be changing for the sake of change?

As corrupt and all as he was (or wasn't), he was great craic. What'll RTE do now that he's gone? "Enda Kenny said something.. Nobody listened.. a pigeon flew by"

I suppose this will put an end to any investigations into his money?

Do you not believe that Bertie's credibility is seriously in doubt in light of his evidence/explanations (or lack thereof) at the Mahon tribunal?

Bertie's dead! Now kids we all know that sometimes when cartoon characters die, they're back again the very next week. That's why I'm presenting this sworn affidavit that Bertie will never, ever, ever return!

Lawyer : This document conforms to all applicable laws and statutes.

This is a sad day for ireland. Regardless of what people say he did an untold amount of god for this country. Its quite sad that he didnt get the chance to be presummed innocent until proven guilty. If their was an election tomorrow ff would win by a landslide. It really is a sad day, it really is true ireland are a nation of bugruders, kicking a great man while he is down. Its funny how the mahon trib. leaked documents everytime it came under pressure

    Bertie going - Mugabe going.
    Coincidence, I think not...

Thats only a small part of it. But yes, the powers-that-be need to be refreshed every now and again, its part of having a strong democracy. People in office as long as Bertie have been inevitably get arrogant and lose touch.

It's in doubt of course. Whether it should be or not is another question. But how does that impact his capability as leader of the country tho?

Would it not be fair to say that the disruption and wild accusations being made by Mahon Tribunal are more disruptive and potentially damaging that any payments Bertie may or may not have taken?

Also, all these people who are saying "he's a thief". Lol... did he dip his hand into your pocket? Were the builders/friends of his who allegedly gave him payments going to give them to you but Bertie decided to be a big mean man and take them for himself?

Anyone think at one stage he was going to say:

"That money was only resting my account"

And where do we start Willie O'Dea for Taoiseach campaign or even better bring back Dustin and the Poultry Party

Just listening to the radio and watching some of the tv there, the ff nutbags are clogging up the airwaves with falling-over-themselves praise for this "Great Man". Was the highlighted above a little freudian slip there anxious? ;) Sure he did some good but he was bent as a two-bit hooker for gods sake.....the speech was one of the funniest things I've seen in years and it's just a pity Dermot Morgan isn't still with us....he would've loved that "it's not because of the tribunal" crap :)

That's ridiculous. You want a democracy but also want the "powers-that-be" changed arbitrarily even if people don't vote that way?

He was a great taoiseach, things will be odd without him in charge.

    Go n-éirí leat Bertie.

Even if he didn't do anything wrong (which is looking more and more unlikely) he's fitness to lead the country is in doubt if he can't manage basic bookkeeping, or come up with explanations for his financial dealings.
Would it not be fair to say that the disruption and wild accusations being made by Mahon Tribunal are more disruptive and potentially damaging that any payments Bertie may or may not have taken?

The disruption of the Mahon tribunal is unfortunate but figuring out whether or not the leader of the country took corrupt payments is an important business, would you not agree? Such an investigation does not equate to a witch hunt.
Also, all these people who are saying "he's a thief". Lol... did he dip his hand into your pocket? Were the builders/friends of his who allegedly gave him payments going to give them to you but Bertie decided to be a big mean man and take them for himself?

Do you not see the wrongness of a senior politician taking corrupt payments??

And what was the catalyst to the change? The Program for National Recovery. Who negotiated it? Fianna Fail.

Hardly arbitrary, he stepped down, its not like there was a coup d'etat. It likely he was pushed to resign by his cabinet colleagues, who were also democratically elected into government.

To f*** with the begrudger's of this greedy little island!

A leader stepping down who put summer houses in spain and bmw's on the irish list of household necessities!

We are the most hypocritical nation ever. Greed is what has built our lovely celtic tiger. We should be looking at our pampered little lives and at least saying "Cheers Bertie, wasn't too bad while it lasted"

The begrudging Irish. MAKES ME SICK.

Why does it matter? Serious question. It needs to be explained.

Haughey was as probably as corrupt as they come, are you saying he wasn't a good leader?

How exactly is being annoyed at corruption begrudging?
Personally I'm not jealous of the man but I'd like to think we shouldn't really have corruption in the little circle of people that actually run my country....
