I have to spend 2 nights - (1 full day) in Los Angeles after arriving by train in Union Station.

I would appreciate any recommendations for an area to stay in for that duration which would be the most beneficial for one day's sightseeing.

(There are so many areas in LA and it's so spread out :()

Any hotel recommendations would also be welcome.

    Thanks in advance. :)

i stayed at the hollywood orchid suites last year (just behind the kodak threatre where they hold the oscars ceremony), decent accommodation and within easy walking distance of the main sites on hollywood blvd and a short bus or metro ride from universal studios.

i also stayed in West hollywood a few years back but the area is a bit run-down but still ok. The area around UCLA is nice and close to the likes of Beverly hills/Brentwood. i wouldn't stay in downtown LA

I lived there for several months in the early 90ies, a stroll down Venice beach where they shot Baywatch is interesting and is like a 1960ies time warp also a drive through the Beverley Hills district and a day at Universal Studios a definite worthwhile, as for Disney land ok if you have kids. Avoid the city ctr and especially the Greyhound station also the Watts district in the southern part of the city is also a notorious no go

I'd head straight out to Santa Monica, it's on the beach and there's loads of places to stay/ things to do. You can stroll down to Venice beach from there too.

Forgot to also say that you can get to anywhere you might want to go in LA as a tourist via bus from Santa Monica, you can bus it straight from Union station to there in about half an hour. Gah, I'm jealous wish I was heading there!!

    Hey crazyground!

For me anyway, a week would definitely be too much in Los Angeles. I went there a couple of years ago with my cousins and we were planning on spending a good few days there but on the second day we arranged a car hire for the next morning and drove up the coast to San Francisco. Definitely one of the most amazing drives you will ever do in your life!

By all means see everything there is in LA (Hollywood, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Universal Studios etc.) But don't bank on getting a week out of it. TV programmes set in LA should really get done for false advertising because the impression we have of the city over here is just wrong. biggrin.gif

Combine it with the rest of California and the surrounding states and make a road trip out of it. What we did after we left LA was drove up to San Francisco, then up the coast to the wine valleys for wine-tasting in a load of different vineyards , then to see the Redwoods, on to Lake Tahoe, then on to Yosemite National Park and back to San Francisco. But you could always go in the other direction and get in San Diego and maybe even a little bit of Mexico or Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Definitely would need a car though as public transport in the US isn't great.

By the way, if you are in Hollywood, spend a bit of time walking up and down Hollywood Blvd and you'll more than likely get caught by these guys who need to fill up audience seats. It's all for free and sometimes you'll even get free stuff. We went to see The Jimmy Kimmel Show and got to see Roseanne being interviewed by him. :) My cousin went to see Karen from Will and Grace's short-lived chat show the other night and got some really cool free stuff at it.
