    Hi Folks,
Putting up roof and will install slate vents for bathrooms.
Do bathrooms need mechanical ventilation extraction or is just standard vent and duct to ceiling is sufficient.

Just put in Bathroom, had to meet Dublin Corporation inspection, and was a 8*8" vent, nothing mechanical.

I don't know about requirement. But I would definitely put in mechanical ventilation if a bathroom had no window.

From Part F of the Building Regs...
    Bathrooms and Sanitary Accommodation

1.8 In a bathroom (with or without a WC), the
following provision for ventilation should be
    adequate:
    (a) a ventilation opening suitable for rapid
ventilation having a total area of at least 1/20th
    of the floor area, and
    (b) (i) mechanical extract ventilation capable of
extracting at a rate of 15 litres per
    second, or
(ii) passive stack ventilation (PSV) designed
and installed in accordance with BRE IP
    13/94 and incorporating an automatic
    humidity sensitive ventilation inlet
    control grille.
    In sanitary accommodation (separate from
bathroom), provision of either (a) or (b) above
    should be satisfactory.
Where a bathroom or sanitary accommodation does
not contain an openable window or external door,
e.g. an internal room, the provision of b(i) or b(ii)
should be adequate. A ventilation opening for rapid
ventilation need not be provided. However, if
mechanical extract ventilation is provided, it should
include an automatic 15 minutes overrun, (after
switch-off) or should be controlled by humidistat. In
addition appropriate provision for air supply should
    be made.

All bathrooms have windows so is a vent with a duct to the outside adequate.
    Thanks,
    Pete

    Hi Folks,
I had my engineer out last night and he confirmed mechanical ventilation is required in all bathrooms.
Where open fireplace is, he said it needs ventilation either with a 4" hole in the wall or in the ground before finished floor is poured. WHich is the better option?

All bathrooms need an openable window or mechanical ventilation. THey don't need both. That said, it is good practice to have a mech vent anyway.

Every habitable room needs ventilation, not just ones with fireplaces. So bed rooms, kitchen etc. The 4" supply to the fire is often used as additional air feed for the fire, it doesn't replace the wall vent
