You could try Abiword ... much smaller download ... it may struggle with 2007 documents, depending on the format.

    Still ... it's < 6 Mb to download, and it's open source. :)

There's a freely available MS add-on for 2003 that will allow you to open any 2007 document.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

    There ya go....

EDIT: Actually - you're not going to be able to install it are ya...

Long shot ... Google Docs ?

Question - what format is your document ... is it .doc or .docx ?
Question - what happens when you try to open it in Office 2003

Umm ... obvious question; do you know anyone with Office 2007 installed who could convert the file for you, using Save As ?

If not, like Archytas said, there is a free add-on to Office 2003 that makes it compatible with docx format -> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

Can you download/install this on a machine with Office 2003 ?

If that is not a runner, and you don't want to go down the OpenOffice route for whatever reason, the only other thing I can suggest is an online conversion site; I've not used them, so I can't comment on how good they are ... http://www.zamzar.com/ is one I've heard mentioned. I'm sure Google search will give you more results.

I've used Zamzar once or twice (needed to hand something up in college, had it in the wrong format) and it worked grand, was able to convert to pdf or doc no hassle...

It's handy if you only need to convert 1 file, it'll save you downloading a new program..

If you want PM me and you can email the file to me. I can open in 2003 (as I have plugin installed) and then resave it as 2003 and email back to you. Prob the quickest and easiest way.
